Anthony Taylor has officially announced his retirement from refereeing, bringing an end to one of the longest and most high-profile officiating careers in English football.
According to The Athletic FC, Taylor bows out at the age of 47 after officiating 831 matches across two decades, including every major domestic cup final. His final assignment came in the Portugal vs Spain World Cup last-16 tie.
It marks the end of an era for one of England’s most recognisable referees.
A Long and Distinguished Career
Regardless of opinions surrounding individual decisions, Taylor’s longevity at the top level is remarkable.
Over the course of his career he officiated:
- 831 professional matches.
- Premier League fixtures.
- FA Cup finals.
- EFL Cup finals.
- European competitions.
- Major international tournaments.
Very few referees remain at the elite level for as long as Taylor did, and his career will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most significant in modern English officiating.
A Divisive Figure
However, Taylor was also one of the most divisive referees among supporters.
Every fanbase will remember decisions that went against their team, and Liverpool supporters are certainly no exception.
Many Reds fans have long argued that some of Taylor’s biggest decisions involving Liverpool were difficult to understand and, in their view, costly.
Whether those feelings were justified or simply reflected the emotions that naturally come with supporting a football club, Taylor’s name frequently generated strong reactions whenever he was appointed to Liverpool matches.
Liverpool Fans React
It is therefore no surprise that many Liverpool supporters have reacted positively to the news of his retirement.
Across social media, plenty of fans have suggested they will not miss seeing Taylor take charge of Liverpool fixtures.
As a Liverpool supporter myself, I have to admit I feel similarly.
There were several occasions over the years where I came away believing Liverpool had been on the wrong end of decisions made by Anthony Taylor.
That is, of course, my opinion as a supporter rather than an objective fact, but I know many Reds fans will share that view.
Every Supporter Has Their Referee
In truth, almost every club has referees they feel have been particularly unlucky for them.
Refereeing at the highest level is incredibly difficult, with every decision scrutinised from multiple camera angles and debated endlessly.
Taylor himself would no doubt argue that he always made decisions to the best of his ability.
That does not stop supporters remembering the moments that hurt their club the most.
The End of an Era
With Taylor stepping away, the Premier League loses one of its most experienced officials.
A new generation of referees will now take over, bringing fresh faces and, inevitably, fresh controversies.
Because one thing football supporters can all agree on is this:
No matter who holds the whistle, refereeing decisions will always be debated.
For Liverpool fans, though, Anthony Taylor’s retirement closes the chapter on a referee who often divided opinion.
His career deserves respect for its longevity, but many Reds supporters will quietly hope they never have to watch another Liverpool match officiated by him again.
