Jürgen Klopp has officially begun his reign as Germany head coach, but before discussing tactics, trophies or World Cup ambitions, he delivered a firm message to the media.
The former Liverpool manager warned that he would have no hesitation in walking away from the role if his family’s privacy was not respected.
Speaking at his first press conference after signing a four-year contract, Klopp said:
“If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace then I’ll be gone, I’ll just turn away.”
It was a powerful statement from a manager who has always been fiercely protective of those closest to him.
A New Challenge Begins
Klopp replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit to Paraguay in the round of 32.
His appointment had been widely expected for several weeks, but the German Football Association finally confirmed the deal on Friday.
The agreement is expected to keep Klopp in charge through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
“This Is the Pinnacle”
Klopp made it clear that he sees the Germany job as the greatest honour of his coaching career.
He said:
“Jürgen Klopp is not going to have any ‘career’ after the national team. This is the pinnacle, the absolutely high point of my footballing career as coach. I will give everything I have got.”
Those comments underline just how seriously he is taking the role.
Despite winning league titles, domestic cups and the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool, Klopp believes leading his country is the ultimate achievement.
Why He Returned
After leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2024, Klopp admitted he had “run out of energy” following nine demanding years at Anfield.
Now, almost two years later, he believes the moment is right to return.
Reflecting on the appointment, he said:
“Over the last few days it was almost like a movie happening to myself.”
“For many, many years it was unimaginable for me to assume this position. As the years went by, it became more or less evident that sooner or later I would be asked to do this job.”
“Now I think the time is right.”
It is Klopp’s first experience of international management after an illustrious club career.
A Warning to the Media
While Klopp is excited about the challenge, he also made it clear that there are limits.
He added:
“I know there are other countries where national team coaches are treated even worse.”
“I love this job but I am always ready to call it quits if need be.”
The message was unmistakable.
He is fully committed to Germany, but not at the expense of his family’s privacy.
First Test Awaits
Klopp will not have long to settle into his new position.
His first match in charge is scheduled for 24 September, when Germany face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League.
Supporters will be eager to see whether he can restore the intensity, belief and identity that made his Liverpool sides so successful.

For Liverpool supporters, Klopp’s return to management will inevitably bring mixed emotions.
Many still regard him as one of the greatest managers in the club’s history, and while seeing him in another dugout may feel strange, few will begrudge him the opportunity to manage his country.
If his opening press conference is anything to go by, Germany have appointed a coach who remains as passionate, determined and authentic as ever.
And now begins the next chapter in one of football’s most remarkable managerial careers.
