Few Liverpool careers have been disrupted by misfortune quite like Calvin Ramsay’s.
When Liverpool signed the Scottish full-back in 2022, many believed they had secured one of Britain’s brightest young defenders. Injuries, however, have repeatedly stalled his progress, and last season he found himself almost completely out of the picture under Arne Slot.
Now, with Andoni Iraola in charge, the question is worth asking:
Does Ramsay still have a future at Liverpool?
A Difficult Time Under Slot
Last season was undoubtedly frustrating for Ramsay.
While other young players were given opportunities, he rarely featured and appeared to be firmly on the fringes of the first-team squad.
Whether that was due to fitness concerns, competition for places or simply not fitting Slot’s plans, the outcome was the same.
Ramsay was left watching rather than playing.
For a young player trying to restart his career after injury, that was a major setback.
A Fresh Start Under Iraola
Every managerial change brings new opportunities.
One of the biggest positives for Ramsay is that Andoni Iraola arrives without preconceived ideas about him.
The new Liverpool head coach will judge players on what he sees in training and during pre-season, not on what happened under the previous regime.
That gives Ramsay a chance to prove himself all over again.
The Right Profile
If fully fit, Ramsay actually possesses many of the qualities Iraola values.
He is:
● Athletic.
● Comfortable on the ball.
● Aggressive going forward.
● Capable of covering ground quickly.
● Technically sound.
Those attributes suit the high-energy football Iraola wants Liverpool to play.
The challenge has never been ability.
It has been staying available.
Injuries Have Been the Biggest Opponent
More than anything else, Ramsay has been battling his own body.
Every time he has looked ready to build momentum, another injury has interrupted his progress.
That makes it difficult for any manager to rely on him.
Football is relentless.
Managers need players they know will be available week after week.
Unfortunately, Ramsay has not yet been able to offer that consistency.
There Is Still Hope
The fact that Ramsay has remained around the first-team environment suggests Liverpool have not completely given up on him.
He still has time on his side, and if he can finally enjoy a sustained run of fitness, there is no reason why he cannot force his way back into contention.
The talent that persuaded Liverpool to sign him has not disappeared.
It simply needs the opportunity to flourish.
A Big Pre-Season
This summer could be the most important of Ramsay’s career.
Every training session.
Every friendly appearance.
Every chance to impress.
They all matter.
If he performs well, he could yet convince Iraola that he deserves a place in Liverpool’s plans.
If not, another loan—or even a permanent move—may become the most realistic option.
My View
Personally, I would love to see Calvin Ramsay succeed at Liverpool.
He has endured more setbacks than most players experience in an entire career, yet by all accounts he has remained professional and continued working hard.
Whether he ultimately becomes Liverpool’s long-term right-back remains uncertain.
But under Andoni Iraola, he deserves one genuine opportunity to show what he can do.
After being left out in the cold last season, perhaps this is finally the fresh start he has been waiting for.
