Every pre-season produces one or two players who quietly make a strong case for greater involvement.
This summer, for me, that player is James McConnell.
Having watched his performances over the past few weeks, I genuinely believe he looks ready to become a regular member of Liverpool’s first-team squad.
Calm Under Pressure
One of McConnell’s biggest strengths is his composure.
No matter the opposition or the tempo of the game, he rarely looks rushed.
He receives the ball well, keeps possession intelligently and makes sensible decisions.
Those qualities are vital for a midfielder hoping to establish himself at Liverpool.
A Manager’s Dream
Under Andoni Iraola, hard work is non-negotiable.
Every player is expected to press, compete and work relentlessly for the team.
McConnell appears to fit that mould perfectly.
He is disciplined out of possession, willing to do the unseen work and always looks prepared to follow instructions.
Managers love players they can trust, and McConnell is beginning to look like one of them.
More Than Just a Squad Player?
Many young players impress in pre-season before disappearing once the competitive matches begin.
McConnell feels different.
He looks physically stronger than before, more confident and far more comfortable around senior players.
Rather than simply trying to avoid mistakes, he now looks like someone who wants the ball and wants to influence games.
That is a huge step in his development.
Competition Is Fierce
Of course, breaking into Liverpool’s midfield will never be easy.
With players such as:
● Ryan Gravenberch
● Alexis Mac Allister
● Dominik Szoboszlai
● Florian Wirtz
● Stefan Bajcetic
already competing for places, opportunities will be limited.
But every successful squad needs reliable players who can step in without weakening the team.
McConnell is starting to look capable of doing exactly that.
Deserves His Chance
Personally, I think he has earned the opportunity.
He has developed steadily through the academy, remained patient and taken every chance given to him.
Now feels like the right time to reward that progress.
Whether he starts regularly or initially features from the bench, I would love to see him trusted more often this season.
A Bright Future
Liverpool supporters always enjoy seeing academy players break through.
It creates a special connection between the team and the fans.
James McConnell has shown enough this pre-season to suggest he belongs at this level.
There is still plenty of development ahead of him, but in my opinion, he looks ready.
Now it’s up to Andoni Iraola to decide whether the next step in McConnell’s journey begins this season.
