Andoni Iraola Provides Joe Gomez Injury Update – Liverpool Defender Set to Miss Start of Premier League Season

30 Jul

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has provided an update on Joe Gomez’s injury, and while the news is disappointing, there is at least some encouragement for supporters.

Speaking after Liverpool’s latest pre-season fixture, Iraola said:

> **“It’s a massive injury. I always say one month, maybe less. But it’s impossible to have him for the start of the Premier League season, but not so long after that.”**

The update confirms Gomez will miss the opening weeks of the new campaign, but it also suggests the setback may not be as long-term as initially feared.

Another Frustrating Injury

For Joe Gomez, it is another cruel setback.

Few players in Liverpool’s squad have endured as many injury interruptions during their careers, and just as he looked ready to compete for a significant role under a new manager, he finds himself facing another spell on the sidelines.

Supporters know exactly what Gomez is capable of when fully fit.

Comfortable at centre-back, right-back and left-back, he remains one of Liverpool’s most versatile defenders.

Unfortunately, availability has too often been the biggest obstacle to establishing himself as a regular starter.

A Blow for Iraola

The timing is particularly frustrating for Andoni Iraola.

Pre-season is when a new manager begins building relationships, implementing tactical ideas and assessing his squad.

Gomez’s injury means he will miss an important part of that process.

With Liverpool already looking to strengthen defensively before the transfer window closes, this latest setback only reinforces the need for another centre-back.

A More Positive Timeline

The encouraging aspect of Iraola’s comments is his suggestion that the injury should keep Gomez out for around a month, possibly even less.

While that rules him out of the opening Premier League fixtures, it raises hope that he could return relatively early in the season rather than facing another lengthy absence.

For both player and club, that is welcome news.

Defensive Depth Tested Again

Liverpool’s defensive resources have already come under scrutiny this summer.

With Joe Gomez unavailable and other changes at the back, the pressure on the club to strengthen remains significant.

Iraola has repeatedly stressed the importance of competition throughout the squad, and Liverpool’s recruitment team are expected to continue working on defensive additions before the transfer window closes.

Everyone Wants to See Gomez Fit

Few Liverpool players are as universally respected as Joe Gomez.

He has always handled setbacks professionally, never hidden from the challenge of fighting his way back and consistently put the team first.

Supporters will be hoping this latest injury is only a minor interruption rather than another major obstacle.

Because if Gomez can finally enjoy a sustained run of fitness, there is little doubt he still has an important role to play under Andoni Iraola.

For now, Liverpool will have to begin the Premier League season without him—but, if Iraola’s assessment is accurate, hopefully not for too long.
