What Ronald Araújo Would Give Liverpool

8 Aug

If Liverpool really do complete a loan deal for Ronald Araújo, it could be one of the most important defensive additions of the summer.

The Reds have spent much of the transfer window looking for another centre-back, and Araújo would bring something Liverpool have desperately needed:

Experience, physicality and elite-level defensive ability.

A Defender Who Can Defend in Space

One of the biggest demands of Andoni Iraola’s football will be defending aggressively.

Liverpool are likely to play with a higher defensive line, press opponents intensely and commit plenty of players forward.

That inevitably leaves space behind the defence.

Araújo is particularly well suited to dealing with that problem.

His recovery pace allows him to defend large spaces and recover when opponents manage to break through Liverpool’s press.

That could give Iraola greater freedom to be aggressive.

Physicality Liverpool Need

Liverpool supporters have seen during pre-season how vulnerable the team can look against physical opposition.

Araújo would immediately improve that area.

He is powerful.

Aggressive.

Strong in the air.

And extremely difficult to beat in physical duels.

Against teams that rely on direct football, crosses and set-pieces, having a defender of Araújo’s physical profile could make a significant difference.

A Different Partner for Virgil van Dijk

Perhaps the most exciting possibility is seeing Araújo alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk remains the leader of Liverpool’s defence, but at 35 years old he cannot be expected to cover every weakness indefinitely.

Araújo could provide the athleticism alongside him.

Van Dijk’s positioning, reading of the game and leadership combined with Araújo’s pace and aggression would give Liverpool a fascinating defensive partnership.

One brings experience and organisation.

The other brings explosiveness and physical dominance.

Experience at the Highest Level

This is where Araújo differs from Liverpool’s younger defensive options.

Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni may have enormous potential, but neither has experienced the pressure of regularly playing for Barcelona in major European matches.

Araújo has.

He has played at the highest level of club football and has represented Uruguay internationally.

That experience matters when Liverpool are competing in the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups.

One-on-One Defending

Modern football increasingly creates situations where centre-backs are left isolated against fast attackers.

Araújo is comfortable in those situations.

His combination of pace, strength and timing allows him to defend one-on-one without immediately needing another player to provide cover.

That could become particularly valuable in Iraola’s system.

If Liverpool want to press higher, they need defenders who are confident dealing with the consequences when that press is broken.

Araújo gives them exactly that.

Set-Piece Strength

Liverpool’s vulnerability against physically strong teams has also been exposed at set-pieces.

Araújo would add another dominant aerial presence.

His height, strength and aggression would give Liverpool an additional weapon when defending corners and free-kicks.

That could be particularly important after the problems Liverpool experienced against Leeds during pre-season.

Leadership and Mentality

There is also something that cannot easily be measured statistically.

Araújo has developed into a leader at Barcelona and Uruguay.

He plays with aggression and personality.

Liverpool have lost several influential senior figures during their recent transition, so adding another player accustomed to taking responsibility could be extremely valuable.

He is not the type of defender who simply hides when a match becomes difficult.

What It Could Mean for Jacquet and Leoni

Interestingly, Araújo’s arrival could actually benefit Liverpool’s young defenders.

Rather than being forced into playing every important match immediately, Jacquet and Leoni could develop alongside experienced defenders.

They would have the opportunity to learn without carrying the entire responsibility of replacing the likes of Ibrahima Konaté.

That balance between youth and experience could be exactly what Liverpool need.

The Iraola Factor

Perhaps the biggest question is how quickly Araújo could adapt to Iraola’s football.

The answer should be encouraging.

His physical qualities are almost tailor-made for an aggressive system.

He can defend high.

He can recover quickly.

He is comfortable stepping out to challenge attackers.

And he has the mentality required to play with intensity.

If Iraola can get the best out of him, Liverpool could have a defender capable of transforming the way the entire back line plays.

A Major Upgrade in Physicality

Ultimately, Ronald Araújo would give Liverpool something they have arguably lacked:

A genuinely dominant, elite-level physical presence at centre-back.

Pace.

Strength.

Aerial ability.

Experience.

One-on-one defending.

Leadership.

Those qualities could make Liverpool far harder to break down.

And if the reported loan move really does happen, Araújo could prove to be much more than simply another centre-back.

He could be the player who gives Iraola the confidence to make Liverpool’s defence more aggressive, more physical and far more difficult to exploit.

That could be hugely important for the new era at Anfield.
