Two Liverpool Youngsters Head Out on Loan as Ramsay’s Anfield Career Appears to End

20 Aug

Liverpool are continuing to make changes to their squad ahead of the new season, with Calvin Ramsay and Ifeanyi Ndukwe both set for loan moves.

According to James Pearce, Ramsay is set to complete a loan move to St Mirren, while Ndukwe is travelling to Spain today to join La Liga outfit Levante on loan. Reports of St Mirren’s interest in Ramsay had emerged earlier this summer.

For Ramsay in particular, this feels like the end of the road at Anfield.

Ramsay’s Liverpool career hasn’t worked out

When Liverpool signed Ramsay from Aberdeen, there was plenty of excitement about his potential.

He was an attack-minded full-back who had impressed in Scotland and looked like someone who could develop into a serious option for the Reds.

Unfortunately, injuries have played a huge part in preventing that from happening.

Ramsay has struggled to establish himself in Liverpool’s first-team picture and has subsequently spent time away from the club on loan.

Now, with his contract expiring next summer, this move to St Mirren effectively looks like the final chapter of his Liverpool career.

It’s a shame because there was clearly talent there.

But sometimes football doesn’t work out the way everyone hoped.

A big opportunity for Ndukwe

For Ifeanyi Ndukwe, however, this is a very different story.

The youngster is heading to Spain to join Levante, giving him the opportunity to experience senior football in one of Europe’s major leagues.

This could be a hugely important season for his development.

Rather than spending another year primarily playing academy football, Ndukwe will now get the chance to test himself against senior professionals and experience a completely different footballing environment.

That’s exactly what a good loan should provide.

This is what Liverpool need to be doing

Not every academy player is going to make it at Anfield.

That’s football.

The important thing is that Liverpool make the right decisions with those players.

For someone like Ndukwe, a loan can potentially accelerate his development.

For Ramsay, the St Mirren move gives him another opportunity to play regular football and rebuild his career.

Liverpool’s academy has produced some fantastic players over the years, but the pathway doesn’t end when a player leaves Melwood/Kirkby.

Sometimes the best thing the club can do is allow a youngster to go somewhere else and play every week.

Good luck to both

Ramsay’s Liverpool career may not have gone as any of us hoped, but he deserves credit for continuing to fight through his injury problems.

Hopefully St Mirren can provide him with the regular football he needs.

And for Ndukwe, this could be the beginning of something really exciting.

Two players heading out on loan. Two very different situations.

One appears to be bringing an end to his Liverpool career.

The other is just beginning his journey towards potentially making it at Anfield.

Good luck to both of them. 🔴
