Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has taken another significant turn.
With the summer transfer deadline approaching, the Reds are holding new talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for their long-term attacking target. This time, there appears to be genuine reason for optimism.
According to The Times’ Paul Joyce, PSG have reduced their asking price for Barcola to around £115 million.
That is a major change from their initial valuation and leaves Liverpool with a crucial decision to make.
PSG have dropped the price
When Liverpool first began discussions with PSG at the end of July, the French champions were reportedly demanding around €170m (£145.7m) for Barcola.
Their revised valuation represents a reduction of roughly £30m, although a £115m fee would still make Barcola one of the most expensive players in Liverpool’s history. Only Alexander Isak’s £125m transfer would currently be higher.
The fee remains enormous, but PSG’s willingness to lower their demands could finally bring the two clubs closer to an agreement.
Liverpool have wanted Barcola for months
The French winger has been Liverpool’s priority target for the wing position since their pursuit of Yan Diomande failed to materialise.
Negotiations with PSG have been difficult, but Liverpool have continued discussions rather than walking away. That persistence now appears to be paying off, with the two clubs reportedly moving closer.
Barcola’s preference could also help Liverpool. He is understood to be prioritising a move to Anfield, while provisional terms for a long-term contract have reportedly already been discussed.
Personal terms are therefore not expected to be the main obstacle. The transfer fee has always been the biggest hurdle, and PSG’s latest concession could finally make a deal possible.
Is Barcola worth £115m?
Liverpool’s decision-makers must still consider whether the winger justifies such a significant investment.
The club have already spent £125m on Isak, committed a substantial package to Florian Wirtz and still have other areas of the squad to strengthen. The question is not simply whether Liverpool can afford Barcola, but whether he is worth £115m.
The need for another winger is clear. Liverpool require more pace, players capable of beating defenders and another attacking option who can relieve pressure on Isak and Wirtz.
Barcola fits that profile. He is explosive, technically gifted, capable of playing on either flank and, at 23, still has room to develop.
Barcola could transform the attack
Barcola and Isak attacking the same defence would give Liverpool a frightening combination.
Barcola’s pace could create space for Isak, while Isak’s movement could open opportunities for Barcola. With Wirtz operating between the lines, Liverpool would have several ways to hurt opponents.
That kind of penetration was sometimes missing against Newcastle. Liverpool had possession and created shots, but they lacked enough threat in behind. Barcola could provide the directness and unpredictability needed to change those games.
Liverpool have also explored alternatives, including Yankuba Minteh, Ibrahim Mbaye, Endrick, Ismaila Sarr, Said El Mala and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. However, none of those options has materialised.
That suggests Liverpool still view Barcola as the player worth waiting for.
The clock is ticking
The transfer window closes at 11pm on September 1, leaving Liverpool limited time to complete the deal.
The key ingredients are in place: PSG have lowered their demands, Barcola reportedly wants the move and Liverpool remain determined to sign him. The remaining issue is whether the clubs can agree on the final fee and structure of the transfer.
Liverpool have to decide
Would I pay £115m for Barcola? I’m not completely convinced. It remains an enormous amount of money, particularly after Liverpool’s spending on Isak and Wirtz.
However, this would not be a move for another squad player. Liverpool would be investing in a winger capable of making a genuine difference immediately and potentially becoming one of the best in Europe.
My verdict
The most encouraging part of this story is not simply the £115m figure. It is the fact that PSG have moved.
They began at around £145m and are now reportedly willing to consider approximately £115m. Liverpool have continued negotiating, Barcola reportedly wants Anfield and personal terms are not expected to be a major issue.
Everything now depends on whether the two clubs can bridge the remaining gap.
Liverpool clearly believe Barcola is worth fighting for, and after months of negotiations, they may finally be getting somewhere. If they complete the deal, they could add another devastating attacking weapon to a team already featuring Isak and Wirtz.
Barcola plus Isak plus Wirtz?
That could be some front line.
But Liverpool must act quickly.
The clock is ticking.
