We now have a date for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup third-round clash with Tottenham.
The Reds will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on Wednesday, September 16, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm.
And this could be a very interesting night for Andoni Iraola.
Tottenham are coming to Anfield
There won’t be any easy games for Liverpool this season, and a home tie against Tottenham is certainly capable of providing a serious test.
But playing at Anfield gives Liverpool a major advantage.
The supporters will be expecting the Reds to progress, while Iraola will have the opportunity to give minutes to players who need them and potentially provide opportunities to some of the younger members of his squad.
The Carabao Cup could be important
Liverpool will be competing on several fronts this season, with the Premier League and Champions League obviously the major priorities.
But that doesn’t mean the domestic cups should be ignored.
Liverpool have an excellent recent history in the Carabao Cup, and another trophy would be a fantastic way for Iraola to begin his reign.
The challenge will be managing the squad.
Liverpool have already shown that depth could be an issue, so Iraola will need to strike the right balance between rotating his team and putting out a side capable of beating Tottenham.
A chance for the youngsters?
This could be another opportunity for some of Liverpool’s younger players.
Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas are among the players who could benefit from cup football, while others on the fringes of the first team will also be desperate to impress.
With such a demanding schedule ahead, these matches can be hugely important for developing the squad.
A good performance against Tottenham could also earn players more opportunities in the Premier League.
Anfield under the lights
There is something special about a cup night at Anfield.
Wednesday night.
8pm kick-off.
Tottenham visiting.
And a place in the fourth round at stake.
It should be a brilliant atmosphere.

Anfield.
Let the cup campaign begin.
