Liverpool’s £123m signing of Bradley Barcola is complete, but comments from PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi have offered an interesting glimpse into the negotiations.
Speaking to Jim White, Al-Khelaifi discussed the transfer and praised the way Liverpool handled the deal.
There are, however, some important distinctions between what has been directly confirmed and what remains speculation or previous reporting.
What Al-Khelaifi confirmed
According to Jim White on talkSPORT, Al-Khelaifi described Barcola as “an amazing player” before explaining PSG’s policy regarding players who no longer want to remain at the club.
He also specifically praised Mike Gordon, saying the Liverpool executive was “very professional and very direct” during the negotiations.
Most importantly, Al-Khelaifi confirmed that the two clubs eventually managed to close the deal.
That gives us a direct insight into how PSG viewed the negotiations from their side.
The transfer fee is confirmed
Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcola for a deal worth £123 million.
The package consists of:
● £106m upfront
● £17m in potential add-ons
● Five-year contract
Those are the confirmed details of the transfer.
There had been plenty of speculation throughout the summer about PSG’s valuation and how far Liverpool were prepared to go, but we now know the final package agreed between the clubs.
What about Barcola wanting Liverpool?
This is where it’s important to separate fact from reporting.
There were numerous reports during the summer claiming that Barcola preferred Liverpool and was keen on a move to Anfield.
That may well have been an important factor in the transfer.
However, Al-Khelaifi’s comments to Jim White don’t independently confirm every detail of those reports.
What he does confirm is PSG’s broader policy that players who don’t want to stay can leave.
So it is reasonable to say Barcola’s wishes were potentially relevant, but we shouldn’t present every previous report about his preference as something Al-Khelaifi has personally confirmed.
Mike Gordon’s involvement is clearer
This is probably the most interesting part of Al-Khelaifi’s comments.
He specifically praised Mike Gordon and described him as professional and direct.
That tells us Gordon was involved in the negotiations from Liverpool’s side.
It also gives Liverpool supporters an indication of the approach taken during the talks.
Rather than focusing on the rumours surrounding the transfer, we now have PSG’s president himself praising the way Liverpool’s representative conducted the negotiations.
That’s significant.
What about Amit Bhatia?
Al-Khelaifi also reportedly mentioned Amit Bhatia and his involvement in helping close the deal.
However, I think this needs to be treated carefully.
We don’t know from these comments exactly what Bhatia did, how extensively he was involved or what his specific role was in the negotiations.
So I wouldn’t say that Bhatia personally negotiated the transfer or that he was responsible for getting the deal over the line.
What we can say is that Al-Khelaifi reportedly acknowledged Bhatia’s involvement and said he was helpful.
That’s interesting, particularly given Bhatia’s incoming role at Liverpool.
A huge investment from Liverpool
Whatever happened behind the scenes, there is no doubt Liverpool have made a major financial commitment.
£123m is an enormous amount of money.
Liverpool clearly believe Barcola can become an elite player for the club, otherwise they wouldn’t have committed such a significant fee.
And this isn’t a signing based purely on potential.
Barcola has already played at the highest level with PSG and France.
Now Liverpool supporters get to see what he can do in the Premier League.
The important thing is not to overstate the story
Transfer stories can quickly become exaggerated once a deal is completed.
It’s tempting to say that Liverpool fought off every other club, that Barcola refused everyone else and that certain executives single-handedly made the transfer happen.
But unless those details are directly confirmed, they’re still reports or interpretation.
What we do know is that:
Liverpool signed Barcola for £123m.
PSG agreed to sell him.
Al-Khelaifi praised Mike Gordon’s approach to the negotiations.
Al-Khelaifi reportedly also acknowledged Bhatia’s help.
Everything beyond that needs to be treated with a little more caution.
My verdict
For me, that’s what makes Al-Khelaifi’s comments so interesting.
We spent weeks hearing rumours about Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola.
Now, after the deal has been completed, we’re getting an insight from the PSG president himself.
The negotiations clearly required work from both clubs, and Al-Khelaifi’s praise of Mike Gordon is particularly noteworthy.
The mention of Amit Bhatia is also intriguing, although we shouldn’t pretend we know more about his exact involvement than has actually been reported.
Ultimately, though, none of that matters once Barcola walks onto the pitch.
The negotiations are finished.
The fee is agreed.
The contract is signed.
Bradley Barcola is a Liverpool player.
Now we can forget about the transfer saga and finally judge the £123m signing where it really matters — on the pitch.
