Liverpool supporters love nothing more than seeing another academy player emerge.
And there could be another name for us to keep a very close eye on.
Lewis John-Charles.
The talented Liverpool right-back made his debut for the club’s U17s this week, another important step in his development.
And while we obviously shouldn’t get carried away with a young player at this stage of his career, there is already plenty of excitement around him.
Remember the name.
Liverpool have a talented right-back coming through
John-Charles has already been attracting attention within Liverpool’s academy.
He is a right-back who has been progressing through the youth system and has previously featured for Liverpool at younger age groups.
He was also involved with the U16s earlier this year, including during Liverpool’s participation in the Elite Neon Cup.
Now he has taken another step by making his U17 debut.
That might seem like a small milestone.
But for a young footballer, these steps matter.
Every time a player moves up an age group, the demands increase.
The opponents are stronger.
The game becomes quicker.
The physical side becomes more challenging.
And the expectations become greater.
Why should Liverpool fans remember Lewis John-Charles?
The biggest reason is his position.
He’s a right-back.
And Liverpool supporters know only too well how important that position can be.
The club has produced some outstanding players in that position over the years, most recently Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Of course, it would be completely unfair to compare a young academy player with one of the greatest right-backs Liverpool have ever produced.

Earlier this summer, reports from those following Liverpool’s academy described John-Charles as a talented right-back who had been involved around higher age groups.
He also trained with Liverpool’s U21s and some first-team players during the summer, according to reports from Anfield Watch.
That’s an encouraging indication of how quickly he is progressing.
It doesn’t mean he’s anywhere near first-team football yet.
But it does suggest that Liverpool’s academy staff are giving him opportunities to test himself against older players.
And that’s exactly what you want to see.
The next step is development
This is where Liverpool have to be patient.
There’s no need to put unnecessary pressure on John-Charles.
He’s still developing.
Making his U17 debut isn’t about suddenly expecting him to become Liverpool’s next first-team right-back.
It’s about taking another step.
Getting more experience.
Learning from mistakes.
Improving physically.
Developing tactically.
And becoming more comfortable against increasingly difficult opponents.
If he continues progressing, the opportunities will come naturally.
Liverpool need to keep producing players like this
One of the most exciting things about Liverpool is the quality of the academy.
The club has already shown that young players can get opportunities if they are good enough.
We’ve seen it with Conor Bradley.
We’ve seen it with other academy graduates.
And now there is another generation coming through.
Lewis John-Charles is just one of the players Liverpool supporters should be watching.
But his position makes him particularly interesting.
Liverpool have spent much of this summer dealing with questions surrounding the right-back position.
The senior squad has options, but there isn’t an obvious long-term specialist solution who is guaranteed to make the position his own.
That’s why having a talented youngster developing underneath them is so valuable.
Don’t rush him
The temptation with any exciting academy player is to immediately ask:
When will he play for the first team?
I’d rather ask a different question.
How good can Lewis John-Charles become?
That’s what matters.
Give him time.
Give him the right coaching.
Let him make mistakes.
Let him develop physically.
And don’t burden him with comparisons to players who came before him.
If he eventually becomes a first-team player, brilliant.
If he needs a different route to get there, that’s football.
The important thing is that Liverpool continue giving him the environment to develop.
Another academy story to follow
There is something special about watching a young player progress through Liverpool’s academy.
You see the small milestones.
The first appearance.
The first goal.
The first step up an age group.
The first involvement with older players.
And eventually, perhaps, the first-team opportunity.
John-Charles has just taken another one of those steps.
U17 football.
It might not sound like a huge story to everyone.
But for the player himself, it is another important moment in his development.
And if the reports about his ability are anything to go by, there could be plenty more milestones ahead.

Liverpool don’t need to rush Lewis John-Charles.
They don’t need to make him the next Trent Alexander-Arnold.
They simply need to help him become the best version of Lewis John-Charles that he can possibly be.
He’s a talented young right-back.
He’s moving through the academy.
And he’s just made his U17 debut.
It’s another name to add to Liverpool’s growing list of academy players worth watching.
