I absolutely love this from Virgil van Dijk.
There was a genuine possibility that the 2026 World Cup could have been the end of his Netherlands career.
After the disappointment of the tournament, Van Dijk admitted that he needed time away with his family before making a decision on his international future.
And then came a conversation with new Netherlands manager Xavi.
Apparently, it took just 10 seconds.
Van Dijk explained how he needed a holiday with his family before sitting down with Xavi to discuss whether he would continue with the Dutch national team.
His decision was almost immediate.
> “I needed a holiday with my family, then an important meeting with the national coach. After ten seconds, it was already clear that I would continue.”
And when asked what Xavi said to him that made such an impression, Van Dijk’s answer was brilliant.
“That I’m Virgil van Dijk!”
Honestly, what more needs to be said?
Xavi apparently made it clear that he still sees Van Dijk as an important player and leader for the Netherlands.
Van Dijk said the conversation was about trust, appreciation and feeling important to the team. Physically, he had no doubts that he could continue, but he also wanted to enjoy playing for his country and feel appreciated.
And I think that tells us quite a lot about Virgil.
He wasn’t simply deciding whether he could still play at international level.
He wanted to know whether he was still genuinely wanted.
Xavi clearly gave him that answer.
The new Netherlands boss also confirmed that Van Dijk will remain captain, describing their meeting in Liverpool as a very good one and saying the defender is positive, motivated and ready to lead the team.
For Liverpool supporters, there is something rather satisfying about hearing this.
We’ve watched Van Dijk go from Southampton signing to Liverpool captain, Premier League champion, Champions League winner and one of the most important defenders in the club’s modern history.
He is now 35, but he clearly doesn’t see age as a reason to simply walk away.
And I actually think the fact that he took time to speak to his family before making the decision makes the whole thing more understandable.
He didn’t rush it.
He went away, switched off, spent time with the people closest to him and then sat down with Xavi.
Ten seconds later, he knew.
Virgil van Dijk was carrying on.
There is also another milestone sitting in the background.
Van Dijk currently has 96 Netherlands caps, meaning he is just four appearances away from reaching 100. However, he has insisted that the century of caps was not what drove his decision.
For him, it was about whether he still felt wanted and whether he could continue enjoying his football.
And perhaps that’s the biggest takeaway from all of this.
Xavi didn’t need to give him some huge tactical presentation.
He didn’t need to convince him with statistics.
He simply reminded him of who he is.
“You are Virgil van Dijk.”
Ten seconds.
Decision made.
And Liverpool fans will certainly be hoping that our captain continues to feel exactly the same confidence and appreciation at club level as he heads into another important season.
Because as long as Virgil believes he still has something to give, I certainly wouldn’t be writing him off.
