Liverpool are being linked with another teenage talent who could become a very big name in the future.
Gilberto Mora is only 17, but he has already played for Mexico at a World Cup and attracted serious interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Now reports are claiming Liverpool could be prepared to spend around £40m to bring him to Anfield.
And I’ve got to admit, that is a lot of money for a 17-year-old.
Liverpool have been watching Mora for some time. The club’s own website reported back in July that there was a developing and serious interest in the Club Tijuana attacking midfielder, although it also made clear that the story came from the media rather than being an official Liverpool transfer announcement.
Mora has certainly done plenty to attract attention.
He became the youngest player at the 2026 World Cup and impressed for Mexico, showing the sort of confidence and technical ability you wouldn’t necessarily expect from somebody so young. He also started Mexico’s knockout victory over Ecuador.
That’s the exciting part.
You’re not looking at a kid who has only played academy football.
Mora has already been playing senior football and has tested himself on one of the biggest stages in the game.
But £40m changes the conversation.
If Liverpool were signing Mora for a relatively modest fee and giving him time to develop, I’d have very few concerns.
At £40m, I’d expect everyone at the club to be absolutely convinced.
And I don’t think that’s unreasonable.
Liverpool have already shown that they are prepared to invest heavily in young players, but they also need to be careful not to turn every promising teenager into a £40m project.
Mora is an attacking midfielder, and that’s another reason I’m interested.
Liverpool have Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and other options who can play in those areas. Iraola is still working out his best attacking midfield combination.
So where would Mora fit?
I wouldn’t expect him to arrive and immediately become a first-team regular.
He shouldn’t have that pressure.
If Liverpool do sign him, I’d want them to think about the next three or four years rather than the next three or four months.
Let him settle into English football.
Let him learn.
Give him opportunities when the time is right.
We’ve already seen Liverpool give young players a chance, with Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni showing that the pathway is there.
Mora could potentially become another one.
There is also the timing to consider.
Mora turns 18 in October, and reports have suggested that a move to Europe becomes possible once he reaches that age. Liverpool have already made direct contact with his representatives, according to TEAMtalk, with a number of major European clubs interested.
So Liverpool aren’t alone.
And that’s probably why the price could become so high.
If several clubs want the same player, the selling club has a pretty strong position.
But I’d still have a question.
Is Gilberto Mora £40m good right now, or could he become £40m good?
There’s a big difference.
Liverpool would obviously be paying for potential.
Nobody should expect a 17-year-old to justify a £40m price tag immediately.
Personally, I think this is the sort of transfer where Liverpool have to trust their scouting department.
If they believe Mora has the mentality, technical ability and potential to become a top-level player, then perhaps spending big now makes more sense than waiting until he’s 19 or 20 and his price has gone through the roof.
But £40m is still £40m.
That’s not pocket change.
And I’d rather Liverpool walk away from a deal than pay a huge fee simply because everyone else wants the player.
The interesting thing is that Liverpool have already been looking at Mora for months.
This isn’t a name that has suddenly appeared because of one good performance.
The club were reported to have made contact during the summer, and the interest has continued.
So I’ll be interested to see how this develops.
I like the idea of Liverpool signing outstanding young players.
I like the idea of building for the future.
And from everything we’ve seen so far, Mora looks like a very exciting talent.
But £40m?
I’d want Liverpool to be absolutely certain.
If they are, then maybe we could look back in a few years and think the fee was actually cheap.
That’s the gamble with players this young.
You aren’t buying the finished footballer.
You’re betting on what he could become.
And Gilberto Mora certainly looks like a player worth betting on — provided Liverpool are convinced the price makes sense.
