Liverpool Told Lamine Camara to Wait – And Alexis Mac Allister’s Future Could Explain Why

19 Oct

I think Liverpool supporters should pay close attention to this one.

The club’s midfield plans could be about to become a much bigger talking point, with fresh comments from journalist David Lynch suggesting Liverpool told Lamine Camara to be patient — while Alexis Mac Allister’s contract situation remains unresolved.

And if those two stories are connected, it could tell us something important about what Liverpool are planning for the future.

Liverpool clearly like Camara. But the timing of a move could depend on Mac Allister.

Liverpool told Camara to hang on

According to reports surrounding the collapse of Chelsea’s proposed move for Camara, Liverpool made contact with the midfielder’s camp and Monaco to tell them to wait, with a potential move in 2027 discussed rather than an immediate transfer.

The Senegal international had been close to joining Chelsea before that deal fell through on deadline day. Liverpool, meanwhile, were not prepared to move for him while Mac Allister remained at Anfield. This Is Anfield reported that Camara had been identified as a possible replacement for the Argentine and that Liverpool’s interest was genuine.

That is the detail I find interesting.

Liverpool were not simply looking for another midfielder to add to the squad. Camara was reportedly being considered in the context of a possible future change in the middle of the pitch.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Mac Allister is definitely leaving. But it suggests Liverpool may be thinking beyond the immediate transfer window.

Mac Allister’s contract situation is becoming difficult to ignore

Mac Allister still has a contract running until 2028, so Liverpool are not facing an immediate risk of losing him for nothing.

However, the Argentine has openly admitted that he was disappointed not to receive a new deal.

Speaking in September, he said he was “very sad” that a renewal had not been offered, particularly after teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch had signed new contracts. He also acknowledged that he had options to leave during the summer.

That is a situation Liverpool will need to manage carefully.

For me, Mac Allister is still an important player. When he is playing with confidence and controlling the tempo, he brings qualities Liverpool cannot easily replace. His passing, intelligence and ability to operate under pressure make him a valuable part of the midfield.

But football clubs cannot ignore contract situations indefinitely.

If there is no progress on a new deal, Liverpool may eventually have to consider whether to keep him into the final stages of his contract or sell while they can still command a significant fee.

That decision might be some way off, but the club should be planning ahead.

Why Lamine Camara makes sense

Camara is an intriguing option because he offers a different profile.

The Monaco midfielder is known for his energy, aggression and willingness to compete defensively. David Lynch has spoken positively about him and suggested his qualities could suit the kind of midfield role Liverpool are looking to develop under Andoni Iraola.

That could be useful for Liverpool.

There have been times this season when the midfield has struggled to protect the defence or control matches consistently. Liverpool need players who can win the ball, cover ground and help the team regain control when games become stretched.

Camara could offer those qualities, although moving from Ligue 1 to the Premier League is never a guarantee of immediate success.

And he would not be a like-for-like replacement for Mac Allister. They have different strengths, and Liverpool would need to think carefully about how the rest of the midfield would function around him.

Still, I can understand why the club might see Camara as a long-term option.

But I wouldn’t rush Mac Allister out of the door

This is where I would be cautious.

If Liverpool are considering Camara because they believe Mac Allister could leave in the future, that is sensible planning.

But I would not want the club to treat the Argentine as expendable simply because a promising alternative is available.

Mac Allister has already shown what he can bring to Liverpool. His recent performances have had their ups and downs, but that is not unusual in a team still trying to find consistency under a new manager.

The bigger question is whether Liverpool can agree a deal that works for both sides.

If Mac Allister wants a new contract and Liverpool are not ready to offer one, the club needs to be honest about the situation. Letting uncertainty drag on could leave everybody frustrated.

At the same time, signing Camara would not automatically solve every midfield problem. Recruitment has to be about more than identifying one player and hoping he fixes everything.

Liverpool appear to be thinking ahead

The important point is that there is no confirmed decision for Mac Allister to leave, and Liverpool have not announced a move for Camara.

But the reported connection between the two is worth watching.

Liverpool apparently liked Camara enough to make contact, yet chose to wait. Mac Allister remains under contract until 2028, but has publicly expressed disappointment over the lack of a renewal offer.

Those two situations could become increasingly important over the next year.

Personally, I would still like Liverpool to find a way to keep Mac Allister if a new deal can be agreed on reasonable terms. He has too much quality to lose without a serious attempt to resolve the situation.

But the club also has to protect its future.

If Liverpool believe Lamine Camara could be the right midfielder for the next stage of Iraola’s team, they need to decide how long they are prepared to wait.

Because if they leave it too late, another club could get there first.

And if Mac Allister’s future remains uncertain, Liverpool need a plan ready — not a scramble when the transfer window opens.

For now, I’m keeping an eye on both stories.

They might turn out to be completely separate.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool’s plans for Camara and the future of Mac Allister are more closely connected than they first appear.
