There are some really interesting names in this Liverpool starting XI, and I have to say, I’m particularly pleased to see the youngsters getting an opportunity.
Alisson starts in goal, with Virgil van Dijk and Jérémy Jacquet providing the experience and quality at the heart of the defence. Ronald Araújo and Kostas Tsimikas complete the back line.
In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch are joined by Trey Nyoni, while the attack features Cody Gakpo, Lewis Koumas and Rio Ngumoha.
That is a team with a mixture of experience, technical quality and youthful energy.
Nyoni gets another opportunity
The first name that jumps out at me is Trey Nyoni.
I’ve been impressed by the youngster’s confidence, particularly the way he wants the ball and doesn’t seem afraid to take responsibility.
Playing alongside Mac Allister and Gravenberch should give him a good opportunity to show what he can do. He won’t have to carry the midfield on his own, but he’ll still have the chance to influence the game.
That’s exactly what you want to see from a young player.
Nyoni doesn’t need to produce a spectacular performance every time he gets minutes. He needs to keep showing the coaching staff that he can handle the demands of senior football.
Another good display would certainly help his case.
Ngumoha and Koumas have a chance to impress
I’m also looking forward to seeing what Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas can offer.
Ngumoha has already shown that he isn’t afraid to take defenders on. He plays with confidence, wants to attack space and can give Liverpool something different in the final third.
Koumas, meanwhile, has been gaining valuable experience with Wales. Regular international minutes should help him return to Liverpool with greater confidence and a better understanding of what is required at senior level.
These are the opportunities young players need.
They can train all week, but there is no substitute for getting onto the pitch and making decisions under pressure.
If Ngumoha and Koumas can take their chances, they’ll give the manager something to think about when the next selection comes around.
Mac Allister and Gravenberch provide the balance
The midfield pairing of Mac Allister and Gravenberch is another important part of this team.
Mac Allister brings composure, intelligence and an ability to connect the different areas of the pitch. Gravenberch offers ball-carrying ability and the potential to drive Liverpool forward through midfield.
Their job will be to give the younger players a platform to perform.
If Liverpool can control possession and move the ball quickly, there should be opportunities for the front three to cause problems.
I’m particularly interested in seeing whether Nyoni can complement them and make the most of having two experienced midfielders alongside him.
A strong defensive foundation
At the other end, Alisson, Van Dijk and Jacquet give Liverpool a solid base.
Jacquet’s development has been one of the encouraging stories for Liverpool, and playing alongside Van Dijk should continue to help him grow. Araújo also offers defensive strength and versatility, while Tsimikas provides experience at left-back.
It’s a lineup that gives the youngsters support without taking away their opportunity to stand out.
And that’s the balance Liverpool need.
Now it’s about taking the opportunity
Of course, naming an exciting team is one thing. The players still have to deliver on the pitch.
But I like the look of this XI.
There is experience in key positions, quality in midfield and a chance for several younger players to show why Liverpool believe in them.
Nyoni, Ngumoha and Koumas are the three I’ll be watching most closely.
They each have something to prove, and performances like this can be important steps in their development.
Liverpool need their senior players to set the standard, but they also need young players who can push for more opportunities rather than simply wait for them.
This is their chance to make a statement.
Now let’s see who takes it.
