Liverpool may have stumbled across one of their most important signings of the season, and the strange thing is that Ronald Araújo was never supposed to be a long-term solution at Anfield.
The Uruguayan arrived from Barcelona on a season-long loan, with Liverpool having the option to make the move permanent for around £47 million. Now, after some seriously impressive performances, the Reds are reportedly giving that possibility serious consideration.
According to Luis F. Rojo, Liverpool have been hugely impressed by Araújo and are weighing up whether to activate the purchase option in his loan agreement.
It is still early in the season, and there is no guarantee the club will commit that sort of money. But if Araújo keeps playing the way he has been, I think Liverpool will have a very difficult decision to make.
For me, the argument for keeping him is getting stronger by the week.
Araújo Has Given Liverpool Something They Needed
When Araújo arrived, Liverpool needed defensive cover. Injuries had left Andoni Iraola short of options, and there were legitimate questions about whether the squad had enough depth to cope across the Premier League and Champions League.
What we have seen since then has been encouraging.
Araújo has brought aggression, physicality and experience to the back line. He looks comfortable in the demands of English football, and he has shown that he is prepared to do whatever the team needs.
That last point matters because he has regularly been used at right-back, despite being a natural centre-back.
With Conor Bradley injured and Jeremie Frimpong also sidelined, Liverpool have needed someone dependable on that side of the defence. Araújo has stepped in and given Iraola another option he can trust.
He has also shown that he can contribute going forward. His goal against Villarreal, when he powered home Rio Ngumoha’s cross during Liverpool’s remarkable comeback, was another reminder that he offers a threat at set pieces as well as defensive strength.
And let’s not forget his performances in the Champions League. He has looked like a player who relishes the occasion rather than one who is overwhelmed by it.
Is £47m Too Much?
This is where the debate gets interesting.
£47 million is a significant investment, particularly when Liverpool have other positions to consider and young defenders already in the squad.
You cannot simply hand over that sort of money because a player has enjoyed a good few weeks. Liverpool need to consider his consistency, fitness, age and where he fits into the long-term plans.
But there is another side to the argument.
Finding a defender who can play both centre-back and right-back at a high level is not easy. Araújo gives Iraola flexibility, and that versatility could be especially valuable over a long season.
Liverpool also know what they are getting. He has played at the highest level with Barcelona, experienced the pressure of representing a huge club and arrived at Anfield with plenty to prove.
There is a risk, of course. His performances need to remain at this level, and the club must be satisfied that he can stay fit and contribute consistently.
But if he does that, £47m could prove to be money well spent.
What About Liverpool’s Other Defenders?
The decision will not be made in isolation.
Liverpool have invested in younger defensive talent, and they need to make sure any permanent deal makes sense alongside the players already at the club.
Jeremy Jacquet is an important part of the future, while Liverpool will also need to consider their options as contracts and injuries shape the defensive picture.
Araújo could give Iraola another experienced player who can cover more than one position. That would be valuable, particularly if Liverpool continue to compete on multiple fronts.
There is also the question of what happens when Bradley and Frimpong are both available again. Liverpool need to decide whether Araújo is best viewed as a centre-back, a right-back or a player who can move between the two depending on the opposition.
Personally, I see that flexibility as a strength rather than a problem.
A squad cannot be built around having one specialist for every situation. You need players who can adapt, and Araújo has already shown that he is willing to do exactly that.
Liverpool Should Keep Their Options Open – But I Would Be Tempted
I would not rush into making the deal permanent today. There is still plenty of football to play, and Liverpool should judge him over the full season rather than get carried away by a strong start.
But I would certainly be keeping a close eye on his progress.
The most encouraging thing is that Araújo looks hungry. He has come to Liverpool wanting to play, wanting to prove himself and wanting to show that he can still perform at the highest level.
He has fitted into the team well, supporters are warming to him, and he is giving Iraola valuable options at the back.
That is a pretty good starting point.
If Araújo maintains this form, Liverpool should seriously consider turning his loan into a permanent deal.
£47m is not pocket change, and the club must get the decision right. But sometimes a transfer opportunity presents itself unexpectedly, and you have to recognise when a player is making a real difference.
Araújo is doing that right now.
Liverpool can wait until the end of the season before making the final call. But if he keeps delivering performances like these, I suspect the conversation around his future at Anfield will only get louder.
And personally, I would be more than happy to see him stay.
