Liverpool supporters are always looking for the next academy graduate who can make the step up to the first team. Every few years, a youngster comes along who gets people talking, and right now there is a name worth keeping an eye on at Kirkby.
Lenix Conde.
The young Liverpool right-back has been compared to Trent Alexander-Arnold, and it is easy to understand why the comparison has generated excitement among supporters. Conde is an attack-minded defender who offers pace, technical ability and an eye for a forward pass.
Now, before anyone starts expecting another Trent to emerge overnight, let’s keep our feet on the ground. Alexander-Arnold was a special talent who went on to become one of the most gifted passing defenders of his generation.
Replacing that kind of quality is no easy task.
But Liverpool have a promising youngster developing within their own academy, and I think he deserves far more attention.
Remember the name: Lenix Conde.
Why Liverpool supporters should be watching him
Conde has been at Liverpool since the age of six, progressing through the club’s academy before becoming a first-year scholar with the under-18s in 2025.
Liverpool’s official academy profile describes him as an attacking right-back with great pace and awareness. Those are encouraging qualities for a position that has become increasingly important in modern football.
The best full-backs are no longer simply defenders who stay in their own half and clear their lines. They need to contribute in possession, create opportunities and understand when to push forward and when to protect the space behind them.
That is where the comparisons with Trent become interesting.
Conde has been praised for his passing range, ability to carry the ball and confidence going forward. Reports on his development have also highlighted his one-on-one defending, which is important because attacking ability alone will never be enough to make it at the highest level.
A full-back can look wonderful going forward, but if he cannot defend when his team loses possession, he will eventually be exposed.
The encouraging thing is that Conde appears to have qualities on both sides of the game. He is not simply being talked about because he can deliver a good cross or attempt an ambitious pass.
There is potential for him to develop into a modern, well-rounded defender.
Of course, potential and achievement are two very different things. The hard work is only beginning, and his progress over the next few seasons will tell us much more about the player he can become.
The Trent comparison is exciting – but let’s be realistic
Whenever a Liverpool academy youngster is compared to Alexander-Arnold, supporters will naturally sit up and take notice.
Trent came through the academy and went on to win the biggest trophies in club football. His passing ability, range of delivery and capacity to create chances from right-back made him one of Liverpool’s most distinctive players.
Finding another player with that kind of influence would be an enormous bonus.
But I would be careful about expecting Conde to become an exact copy of him.
The comparison appears to be based on aspects of his style, particularly his ability on the ball and his passing. Other reports have suggested that Conde is especially comfortable in one-on-one situations and can carry the ball forward effectively.
Those are useful foundations, but he still has a long way to go.
He needs regular football, experience against different types of opponents and the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them. Physical development, tactical understanding and consistency will all play their part.
Most importantly, he needs to become his own player.
Liverpool do not need another Trent Alexander-Arnold in every detail. They need excellent footballers who can help the club win matches, and if Conde develops into a first-team right-back in his own style, that would be a huge success.
Liverpool have a pathway to the first team
One reason to be excited about Liverpool’s academy is that there is a clear example for young players to follow.
Trent’s journey from a local youngster to a Champions League and Premier League winner showed what can happen when exceptional talent meets opportunity and hard work.
More recently, Rio Ngumoha has demonstrated that young players can attract serious attention when they are given opportunities to perform. Trey Nyoni has also shown that Liverpool’s academy can produce players capable of making an impression around the senior squad.
That does not mean every promising youngster will make it. Far from it.
Academy football is full of talented players, and the transition to senior football is a massive hurdle. Some players develop quickly, others need more time, and some never quite make the final step.
But Liverpool have every reason to keep investing in their young players and giving the best prospects a chance to show what they can do.
Conde is one of those players worth monitoring.
He has already experienced setbacks, including a lengthy spell out with an ACL injury earlier in his development. Getting back to regular football and building momentum after that kind of injury is a challenge in itself.
His return to action and progression through the under-18s will be important. What matters now is that he stays fit, continues improving and gets the minutes needed to develop his game.
There is no need to rush him or pile unrealistic expectations on his shoulders.
Could Conde eventually solve a problem for Liverpool?
Liverpool supporters know how important the right-back position can be.
Conor Bradley has the potential to be a major player for the club, but injuries have disrupted his progress. Liverpool need options, and developing a talented right-back from within the academy would be ideal.
Conde is not at the stage where we should be talking about him as an immediate solution to the first team’s needs. He still has plenty to prove at youth level before that conversation becomes realistic.
But looking further ahead, it is exciting to think about what he might become.
If he continues to develop his defensive game while retaining his attacking instincts, Liverpool could have another homegrown player capable of challenging for a place in the senior squad.
And with Andoni Iraola looking to build his own Liverpool side, the academy’s most promising players will surely want to show they can fit into his plans.
The key for Conde is to keep progressing without becoming distracted by the comparisons or the attention that comes with them.
He does not have to be the next Trent tomorrow. He just has to be a better player next month than he is today.
Remember the name
I love seeing Liverpool develop their own talent. There is something special about watching a young player work his way through the academy and eventually earn the chance to represent the first team.
Conde has a long road ahead of him, and nobody should pretend his future is guaranteed. The Trent Alexander-Arnold comparison is a compliment, but it also creates expectations that no young player needs hanging over them.
For now, I want to see him stay fit, gain experience and continue developing into the best right-back he can be.
The qualities are encouraging, the potential is there, and Liverpool have another youngster worth following closely.
Could he eventually make the breakthrough at Anfield? It is far too early to say.
But if he keeps progressing, we could be hearing a lot more about him in the years ahead.
Liverpool have found a promising attacking right-back in their academy. Remember the name – Lenix Conde.
