Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on Borussia Dortmund’s 17-year-old winger Mathis Albert, with BILD claiming the Reds are among the clubs monitoring one of the most exciting young talents in German football.
And this is a name worth keeping an eye on.
Albert has already made a big impression despite his age, earning senior international recognition with the United States and attracting attention from several major European clubs. Liverpool are not alone in their interest, but the possibility of the Reds moving for another exciting young attacker is certainly intriguing.
According to BILD, Liverpool and Arsenal are watching the teenager’s development, although Manchester City appear to be further ahead after pursuing him previously.
There is no suggestion that Liverpool have made a formal bid at this stage, so this is one to watch rather than a transfer that looks close.
Who is Mathis Albert?
Albert joined Borussia Dortmund from the LA Galaxy academy in 2024 and has quickly built a reputation as a gifted attacking prospect.
The left-sided winger is known for his ability in one-on-one situations, taking defenders on and looking to make things happen rather than simply playing the safe pass.
That willingness to attack defenders is an attractive quality. Liverpool supporters love watching a winger who is prepared to be direct, take risks and get fans off their seats.
Despite being only 17, Albert has already made his senior debut for Dortmund and represented the United States at senior international level.
He also made headlines in September when he scored against Chile, briefly becoming the youngest goalscorer in US men’s national team history before that record was surpassed by Cavan Sullivan.
It is quite an achievement for a player who is still at the beginning of his career.
Why could Liverpool be interested?
Liverpool have invested heavily in young talent in recent years, and adding another highly rated winger would fit that wider approach.
Under Andoni Iraola, the Reds want attacking players who can offer pace, creativity and the ability to beat an opponent. Albert’s reputation as a dribbler certainly makes him an interesting prospect in that respect.
Of course, Liverpool already have plenty of exciting options in attack, with Bradley Barcola, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Muñoz among the players offering plenty of potential.
Ngumoha’s recent Champions League performance against Villarreal showed just how dangerous a fearless young winger can be when given the freedom to express himself.
That does not mean Liverpool necessarily need to sign Albert, but the club should always be looking ahead. If their recruitment team believe he has the potential to become an elite player, monitoring his progress now could be worthwhile.
The important thing is identifying the right talent before the competition becomes even fiercer.
Manchester City could make things difficult
There is a significant complication for Liverpool.
Manchester City have reportedly been pursuing Albert for some time, with previous reports suggesting they were prepared to offer a substantial fee to prise him away from Dortmund.
BILD have also indicated that City are in a stronger position than Liverpool and Arsenal at present.
Dortmund, meanwhile, are reluctant to lose a player they regard as one of their brightest prospects. They want Albert to remain part of their plans and develop within the first team.
However, limited senior opportunities could become a factor in his future. At this stage of his career, regular football and a clear development pathway will be hugely important.
Liverpool would need to convince both the player and Dortmund that Anfield offered the right next step.
And with several major clubs watching, any potential deal would be far from straightforward.
Should Liverpool make a move?
For me, this is exactly the sort of rumour worth following, even if nothing happens immediately.
Albert is young, talented and already gaining valuable experience at club and international level. Liverpool should be keeping tabs on players like him, particularly when they have the potential to develop into first-team options in the years ahead.
But let’s not get carried away just yet.
Liverpool have other priorities, and having a promising young winger on the radar does not automatically mean a transfer is imminent. There is also a big difference between spotting a talented teenager and knowing whether he can eventually deliver consistently in the Premier League.
Still, if the Reds believe Albert has the ability to reach the very top, I would rather see them doing their homework now than waiting until every major club is fighting for his signature.
Mathis Albert is certainly one to watch. Liverpool’s reported interest is worth keeping an eye on, but for now, this remains a developing transfer story rather than a deal gathering pace.
Could we see another exciting young attacking talent added to Liverpool’s plans in the future? It is too early to say, but this is a name worth remembering.
