Ronald Araújo Is Giving Liverpool Exactly What They Needed at Right-Back

25 Oct

Liverpool may have found the answer to one of their biggest problems this season, and his name is Ronald Araújo.

The Uruguayan has been exactly what Liverpool needed at right-back. He brings a physical presence, defensive aggression and a willingness to put his body on the line that supporters can immediately appreciate.

But there is another side to his game that has been particularly encouraging. Araújo is not simply a defender who wants to win his battles and get rid of the ball. He can drive forward, contribute to attacking moves and give Liverpool something going the other way, too.

His performance in the 2-0 win over Brighton at Anfield was the latest reminder of just how valuable he could become.

A defender who loves a battle

Liverpool have needed greater solidity at right-back, particularly with injuries disrupting their options in the position.

Araújo offers something different. He is powerful, aggressive in the tackle and prepared to throw himself into situations that other players might hesitate over.

Against Brighton, he was willing to put his body on the line, make important interventions and compete for every ball. One of the most striking things about his performance was how much the crowd responded to his commitment.

There is something supporters love about a player who makes it clear that nothing is coming easily for the opposition.

Araújo has that edge. He wants to win his duels, he does not shy away from the physical side of the game, and he appears determined to make the most of his opportunity at Liverpool.

That attitude matters. Talent is important, but so is having players who are prepared to suffer for the team when the opposition is putting them under pressure.

His attacking contribution is a welcome bonus

What makes Araújo even more interesting is that his contribution does not stop when Liverpool win the ball back.

Given his reputation as a centre-back, some supporters might have expected him to be a fairly conservative option on the right. Instead, he has shown that he can get forward and make things happen.

Liverpool’s opening goal against Brighton was a good example. Araújo won duels in the build-up, drove towards the byline and delivered the ball into a dangerous area. Florian Wirtz’s effort ultimately went in via a deflection off Pascal Groß, but the defender played an important part in creating the opportunity.

He also came close to getting on the scoresheet himself, forcing Bart Verbruggen into a save before half-time.

That is an encouraging combination: a defender who takes his defensive responsibilities seriously but still has the confidence to contribute in the final third.

Liverpool do not need their right-back to become another winger. They need someone who understands when to defend, when to advance and how to make the right decisions. Araújo is showing signs that he can offer that balance.

Height, experience and leadership

There are other benefits to having Araújo in the team, too.

His physical stature gives Liverpool another strong presence when defending set pieces, while also providing an additional aerial threat at the other end. In a league where matches can be decided by a corner or a free-kick, that is not a small advantage.

Then there is his experience.

Araújo has played at the highest level, and Liverpool need players who can handle pressure rather than be overwhelmed by it. His confidence in the tackle and willingness to take responsibility suggest a player who is comfortable with the demands of elite football.

He also brings an assertive personality to the defence. Liverpool already have leaders in Virgil van Dijk and other senior players, but leadership does not have to come from wearing the captain’s armband. It can come from setting an example through your actions.

Araújo’s performances are doing exactly that.

When a player repeatedly puts himself in harm’s way to prevent an opponent from getting through, his teammates and supporters notice. It sends a message about the standards he expects of himself.

He is making the most of his opportunity

Perhaps the most appealing part of Araújo’s Liverpool story is the way he has responded to being given an opportunity.

He has had to adapt to a different role, and there have been difficult moments along the way. His earlier substitutions under Andoni Iraola showed that the manager was still working out how best to use him in certain tactical situations.

But Araújo has kept working, and against Brighton he delivered a performance that earned widespread praise. He was subsequently voted Liverpool’s official Player of the Match by supporters, underlining just how much his display was appreciated.

That is the attitude Liverpool need from every member of the squad.

Nobody should be guaranteed a place simply because of their reputation or transfer status. Players have to earn their opportunities, perform when selected and give the manager a reason to keep picking them.

Araújo looks determined to do exactly that.

With other right-back options affected by fitness issues, his ability to provide defensive reliability and an attacking contribution could prove particularly important over the coming weeks.

Should Liverpool look at making the move permanent?

It is still too early to make sweeping judgements based on a handful of performances, and Liverpool will need to assess the bigger picture before deciding what happens beyond this season.

However, the qualities Araújo is displaying make a strong case for keeping a close eye on how his spell develops.

Liverpool need defenders who can handle the physical demands of the Premier League. They need players who can defend one-on-one, compete in the air, show leadership and contribute to the way the team attacks.

Araújo is showing that he can bring all of those qualities to the table.

The most encouraging thing is that he seems to understand what the opportunity means. He is not coasting on his reputation. He is fighting for his place, making important contributions and winning over the supporters through his performances.

That is how players build a connection with a fanbase.

The verdict: Liverpool need more of this

For me, Ronald Araújo is giving Liverpool exactly what they needed at right-back.

He is robust defensively, aggressive in the challenge, strong in the air and prepared to put his body on the line. His experience and leadership are valuable additions, while his attacking contribution has been a pleasant surprise.

Most importantly, he looks hungry.

Liverpool have plenty of technical quality in their squad. What they also need are players who bring determination, resilience and a willingness to fight for every result.

Araújo is showing those qualities, and his display against Brighton was another big step in the right direction.

There is still plenty of football to be played, but if he continues performing at this level, Liverpool will have a serious decision to make about his future.

He arrived with an opportunity to prove himself. He is now giving Liverpool plenty of reasons to believe he could be the right man for the job.
