Liverpool are reportedly drawing up plans to strengthen their central midfield, with two names seemingly standing out above the rest.
According to Sky Sport Germany, Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott are both on Liverpool’s shortlist, while Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha is also highly rated by the club but is not currently a priority target.
For me, this is an interesting development. Andoni Iraola is still working to get the best out of his current squad, but it is clear that Liverpool are already looking at ways to improve the team further.
If this season is about building a stronger foundation, getting the midfield right has to be a major part of that process.
Lamine Camara and Alex Scott Lead Liverpool’s Midfield Shortlist
The report from Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg puts Camara and Scott among Liverpool’s leading options for the central midfield position.
Camara currently plays for AS Monaco and represents an exciting option for the future. The Senegal international has attracted attention with his energetic style and ability to compete in the middle of the pitch.
Scott, meanwhile, is already playing in the Premier League with Bournemouth. The England international is a technically gifted midfielder who can carry the ball, press opponents and help link defence with attack.
Both players offer something different, but they could each give Iraola more options in an area where Liverpool need greater depth and competition.
The important point is that these are reported targets rather than confirmed transfer negotiations. There is still a long way to go before we know who Liverpool will actually pursue, but the names being considered give us an idea of the type of midfielder the club may want.
Alex Scott Would Make Plenty of Sense Under Iraola
Of the names mentioned, Scott is particularly interesting because he already knows Iraola’s football from their time together at Bournemouth.
That familiarity could be valuable.
Scott understands the demands of an energetic, pressing-based approach and has experience of the Premier League. Signing a player who already knows the manager’s methods could help Liverpool avoid some of the adjustment period that comes with bringing in someone from another league.
He is comfortable receiving the ball, moving it quickly and carrying possession into advanced areas. Those qualities could help Liverpool become more fluid in midfield and give the forwards better service.
However, Liverpool would need to consider the financial side of any potential deal. Bournemouth would have little reason to let an important young player leave cheaply, particularly for another Premier League club.
I like the idea of Liverpool looking at Scott, but admiration alone does not make a transfer straightforward.
Lamine Camara Could Be an Exciting Alternative
Camara is another name worth keeping an eye on.
The Monaco midfielder offers energy, aggression and the potential to develop further. At his age, there is still room for improvement, and Liverpool could view him as a player who can contribute now while growing into a bigger role over time.
He would also bring a different background and experience to the squad, potentially giving Iraola another option when Liverpool need to control the middle of the pitch or increase their intensity without the ball.
Of course, moving from Ligue 1 to the Premier League is a significant step. Liverpool would need to be confident that Camara’s qualities would translate to English football and that he could adapt to the pace and physical demands of the competition.
But if the recruitment team believe he has the right attributes, he could be a very interesting addition.
For a Liverpool side still developing under Iraola, signing the right midfielder could make a considerable difference.
Felix Nmecha Is Admired – But Not a Priority
The third name in the report is Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund.
Sky Sport Germany reports that Liverpool hold the German international in high regard, but he is currently behind Camara and Scott in the club’s midfield plans.
That does not mean Liverpool have ruled him out. Transfer shortlists can change quickly, depending on availability, negotiations and the price being demanded by selling clubs.
Nmecha is an athletic, versatile midfielder who can contribute in both boxes. His ability to carry the ball forward and help defensively would give Liverpool another option, particularly when matches become physically demanding.
There has reportedly been contact with his representatives, but that should not be mistaken for an imminent transfer or a formal bid.
For now, the key takeaway is that Liverpool appear to be assessing several possibilities rather than committing to one player.
That is sensible recruitment, especially when the cost of signing a midfielder could be substantial.
Liverpool Need More Than Just Another Body in Midfield
For me, this is about finding the right profile rather than simply adding another name to the squad.
Liverpool need midfielders who can handle the intensity of the Premier League, contribute defensively and help the team progress the ball under pressure.
They also need enough depth to cope with a demanding schedule across several competitions. Injuries and fatigue can quickly expose a squad that lacks suitable alternatives, and Iraola needs options he can trust when rotation becomes necessary.
The midfield has to provide a balance between energy, creativity and defensive discipline. Get that balance right, and Liverpool should be better equipped to control games rather than relying on moments of individual quality.
That is especially important during this transition season. Iraola is still building his team, and the right recruitment decisions could help turn promising performances into consistent results.
My Verdict: Liverpool Must Get This Decision Right
I am encouraged that Liverpool appear to be looking seriously at midfield options, even while Iraola continues working with the players already at his disposal.
Scott would be an attractive option because of his Premier League experience and familiarity with the manager. Camara looks like an exciting possibility with room to develop, while Nmecha offers another profile if Liverpool’s priorities change.
I would not get carried away with transfer rumours at this stage. Being on a shortlist does not mean a player will arrive, and much will depend on the clubs involved and the cost of any deal.
But I do think strengthening central midfield should be high on Liverpool’s agenda.
Iraola needs a squad capable of competing across a long season, and Liverpool cannot afford to leave him short of options in such an important area.
Camara and Scott appear to be the leading names for now, with Nmecha further down the list. The next question is whether Liverpool can turn that interest into the right signing for Iraola.
If the club gets this one right, it could be a major step towards building the stronger, more balanced Liverpool team we all want to see.
