Trey Nyoni Has Been a Revelation for Liverpool at 19 – Has He Done Enough to Become a First-Choice Player Under Iraola?

29 Oct

Liverpool may have found a midfield gem right under their noses, and Trey Nyoni is making it increasingly difficult for Andoni Iraola to leave him out.

At just 19, the youngster has started to look increasingly comfortable in the first team, showing maturity, composure and an understanding of the game that you would not necessarily expect from someone still at the beginning of his senior career.

His recent performances have caught the eye, particularly against Villarreal in the Champions League and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. Nyoni has looked like a player who belongs at this level rather than a youngster simply being given minutes to gain experience.

But that brings us to the big question: has Nyoni done enough to earn a regular starting place at Liverpool, or should Iraola continue to bring him through gradually?

Nyoni Is Making His Chances Count

One of the most encouraging things about Nyoni is that he does not appear overwhelmed by the occasion.

Playing for Liverpool comes with enormous pressure, especially when you are competing against established internationals for a place in midfield. Yet Nyoni has shown a willingness to get on the ball, make himself available and play with confidence.

His performance against Chelsea was another example. He looked composed in possession and showed the sort of intelligence that can make a real difference in the middle of the pitch.

There is more to his game than simply keeping the ball moving, too. His awareness, positioning and ability to read situations suggest he could develop into a very useful option in the deeper midfield role.

At 19, he still has plenty to learn, but Liverpool supporters have every reason to be excited about what they are seeing.

Could Nyoni Be the Answer to Liverpool’s Midfield Problem?

For me, this is where things get interesting.

Liverpool have needed greater balance in midfield, and Nyoni could offer something different to some of the more attack-minded options available to Iraola.

The youngster has spoken about seeing himself primarily as a number six, while also being willing to learn other midfield roles. That versatility could prove valuable as Liverpool negotiate a demanding schedule across several competitions.

Iraola has already shown that he is willing to trust young players when they earn their opportunity. Nyoni is benefiting from that approach, but his performances are now giving the manager a genuine selection decision to consider.

If the teenager continues to show that he can protect the defence, win possession and use the ball intelligently, why shouldn’t he be given a serious chance to establish himself?

Liverpool cannot afford to overlook a promising academy player simply because more experienced names are ahead of him.

Has He Done Enough to Become First Choice?

This is where I would stop short of demanding that Nyoni starts every match.

He has impressed, without doubt, but there is a difference between showing outstanding potential and proving you can deliver consistently over a full Premier League season.

The physical demands of senior football are considerable, and Liverpool need to be careful not to put too much pressure on a 19-year-old too quickly. There will be difficult afternoons, mistakes and games when an experienced midfielder is the better option.

But that should not mean Nyoni automatically returns to the bench whenever the senior players are available.

I believe he has done enough to be seriously considered for a starting place, rather than simply being viewed as a youngster who can fill in when others are unavailable.

There is a big difference between earning regular opportunities and being guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Nyoni deserves the former, and if he keeps performing at this level, the latter could follow.

Iraola Must Give Him a Genuine Opportunity

One of the most encouraging aspects of Iraola’s approach has been his willingness to trust young talent.

Nyoni appears to suit the manager’s forward-thinking style, with his willingness to play forward and contribute to the press. The challenge now is to turn these promising performances into sustained progress.

I would like to see him given a run of starts in the right games, rather than being judged on isolated appearances. That would allow us to see how he handles different opponents, difficult situations and the pressure of playing week after week.

It would also send a positive message to Liverpool’s academy players: if you perform well enough, there is a genuine pathway into the first team.

And with Liverpool competing on several fronts, there should be opportunities for Nyoni to make a meaningful contribution this season.

My Verdict: Liverpool Have a Talent They Must Not Waste

I am genuinely excited about Nyoni’s development. He looks composed, intelligent and confident, and he is giving Liverpool supporters something to get excited about beyond the club’s established stars.

I am not saying he should automatically start every game, because he is still learning and needs time to develop. But I do believe he has earned more than occasional minutes off the bench.

If his performances continue in the same vein, Iraola will have a difficult decision to make. Does he stick with the more experienced midfielders, or does he reward a teenager who is increasingly making his case impossible to ignore?

For me, Nyoni should be pushing hard for a starting place now.

Liverpool have spent plenty of money looking for solutions in the transfer market over the years. Sometimes, though, the answer can come from within the club.

Trey Nyoni might not be the finished article at 19, but he is beginning to look like a player Liverpool need to build around for the future.

The next step is making sure he gets the opportunities to prove just how good he can become.
