Liverpool are considering offering Virgil van Dijk a new contract, with the club keen to keep their captain at Anfield beyond the end of the season.
According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, the Reds are open to discussing an extension for the Dutch defender, whose current deal expires next summer.
And personally, I think this is exactly the right approach.
There has been plenty of speculation about Van Dijk’s future, particularly with his age becoming a factor in discussions about Liverpool’s long-term defensive plans.
But one thing should not be forgotten: Van Dijk remains one of the most important players in this Liverpool squad.
At 35, he is still playing every minute of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign so far this season, and Andoni Iraola clearly appreciates what he brings to the team.
Liverpool want to keep their captain
TEAMtalk understands that Liverpool are considering a 12-month extension, potentially with additional options attached.
There is no immediate rush to get an agreement completed, but the club want Van Dijk to know that they would welcome him staying beyond the current campaign.
That is important because this is not simply about keeping an experienced centre-back.
Van Dijk is the captain, a leader in the dressing room and someone who understands exactly what it takes to play for Liverpool.
He has already made 387 appearances for the club and is now into his tenth season at Anfield.
His influence goes far beyond what he produces during the 90 minutes.
Age should not automatically mean goodbye
Of course, Liverpool have to plan for the future.
Van Dijk will turn 36 next summer, and the club cannot ignore the need to develop a younger defensive partnership capable of taking Liverpool forward over the coming years.
But that doesn’t mean they should automatically allow their captain to leave.
Look at the experience he can offer younger defenders such as Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni.
Having Van Dijk alongside them, helping them develop and passing on his knowledge, could be incredibly valuable.
Jacquet has already had opportunities to play alongside the Liverpool captain, while Leoni will hopefully return from injury and benefit from having such an experienced figure around him.
You cannot simply replace that level of leadership overnight.
Iraola knows how important Van Dijk is
Another significant part of this story is the fact that Iraola is reportedly impressed by Van Dijk’s standards both on and off the pitch.
The new Liverpool manager needs experienced players who can help establish his ideas and set the standards he expects from the rest of the squad.
Van Dijk is perfectly placed to do that.
Liverpool are going through a period of transition, with new players arriving and younger talents trying to establish themselves.
Having a captain who understands the demands of the club is a major advantage.
His performances against the strongest teams will continue to be scrutinised, but I still believe he has plenty to offer.
Would Van Dijk accept a reduced contract?
One potential complication is his salary.
Van Dijk is among the highest-paid defenders in European football, and TEAMtalk suggests he may need to accept a reduction to reach an agreement.
That is understandable.
A 12-month extension with options attached could make sense for both parties, allowing Liverpool to retain his experience without committing to a lengthy deal.
Ultimately, the club need to find an arrangement that reflects his importance while also protecting their long-term plans.
I would hope both sides can find a compromise.
My verdict: Liverpool must keep Van Dijk
For me, this is a no-brainer.
Liverpool need to build for the future, but they also need experienced leaders who can help the next generation develop.
Van Dijk remains an important part of this team, and I would much rather see him sign another contract than watch him walk away for nothing next summer.
There will eventually come a time when Liverpool have to move on from their captain. That is inevitable with every great player.
But I don’t believe that time has arrived just yet.
Give him another year, keep building the defence around younger players and allow him to help guide the club through this next phase.
Virgil van Dijk has given Liverpool so much over the years. If he is still performing at the level required, there is every reason to keep him at Anfield.
The captain deserves the opportunity to decide his future, and I would love to see him lead Liverpool for another season.
Keep the captain. Keep the leader. Keep Virgil van Dijk.
