Trey Nyoni Is Liverpool’s Midfield Future – But Reds Must Not Make the Mistake of Relying on Him Too Much, Too Soon

5 Nov

Trey Nyoni is quickly becoming one of the most exciting young players at Liverpool, and his recent performances have given supporters plenty of reasons to get excited about what the future might hold.

The teenager has shown confidence, maturity and an ability to influence games that is remarkable for someone still so early in his senior career.

His performance against Fenerbahçe was another example. Nyoni scored Liverpool’s opening goal in Istanbul, delivered an impressive display in midfield and walked away with the Man of the Match award despite the Reds suffering a disappointing 3-2 defeat.

There is no question in my mind that Nyoni has the potential to become a major player for Liverpool.

But there is also a danger here.

Liverpool are beginning to rely heavily on a young midfielder who should still be developing, learning and enjoying his football.

That is not a criticism of Nyoni. It is a criticism of the squad around him.

Nyoni Is Showing Exactly Why Liverpool Believe in Him

It is easy to see why Andoni Iraola has been willing to give Nyoni opportunities.

He doesn’t look frightened of playing senior football. He wants the ball, looks to move possession forward and is prepared to take responsibility when Liverpool need someone to make things happen.

Against Fenerbahçe, he was arguably Liverpool’s best player.

His goal was a special moment, but his overall performance was just as encouraging. He handled the pressure, competed against experienced opponents and showed the confidence to keep trying to influence the game.

For a 19-year-old, that is hugely encouraging.

Liverpool have been crying out for more energy, forward passing and creativity in midfield. Nyoni is showing that he can provide those qualities.

He also appears to understand that being a midfielder is about more than simply keeping possession. He wants to drive forward, find attacking positions and make things happen.

Those are exactly the qualities supporters want to see.

I genuinely believe Liverpool have a special talent on their hands.

But There Is a Danger of Too Much, Too Soon

This is where I think Liverpool need to be careful.

Nyoni is enjoying a fantastic breakthrough, but we should not forget how young he is.

There will be difficult games, mistakes, dips in form and periods when he needs to be taken out of the firing line.

That is completely normal for a young player.

The problem is that Liverpool’s midfield has been struggling for consistency, and Nyoni is increasingly looking like one of the players the team needs to turn to.

That is a lot of responsibility to place on someone at this stage of his career.

He should be allowed to develop naturally, rather than being expected to provide the energy, creativity and control that more experienced midfielders have struggled to deliver.

I want to see Nyoni playing regularly, but I don’t want Liverpool to reach a situation where the team falls apart whenever he isn’t available.

That would be unfair on the youngster and a sign that the club have not done enough with their recruitment.

Liverpool Must Sign a Midfielder to Play Alongside Him

For me, this is becoming an absolute priority.

Liverpool need to sign an experienced, high-quality midfielder who can work alongside Nyoni and take some of the pressure away from him.

Not another player who simply wants to receive the ball and pass it sideways. Liverpool need someone who can take control of the middle of the pitch.

Someone with energy, physicality, defensive awareness and the ability to play forward passes.

I have previously spoken about the importance of finding another midfielder in the mould of Fabinho.

Liverpool need that presence in front of the defence, someone who can win challenges, protect the back four and allow the more creative players to express themselves.

Nyoni could then be given the freedom to play his natural game without having to worry about carrying the entire midfield.

That is how you develop a young talent properly.

You surround him with quality, experience and the right balance.

Nyoni and Mac Allister Could Be an Important Partnership

I also like the potential of a midfield partnership between Nyoni and Alexis Mac Allister.

They offer different qualities, and there is the possibility of them complementing each other if Liverpool get the balance right.

Mac Allister has the experience, passing ability and intelligence to help control games, while Nyoni brings energy, movement and a willingness to drive forward.

But I wouldn’t expect those two to solve every problem on their own.

Liverpool still need a proper defensive midfielder who can provide protection and allow the other midfielders to concentrate on their strengths.

That would give Iraola more options and reduce the pressure on Nyoni to do everything.

It would also make Liverpool less predictable in midfield, with different combinations available depending on the opposition.

Iraola Must Protect One of Liverpool’s Biggest Young Talents

One of the biggest responsibilities for Iraola is managing Nyoni’s development.

The manager clearly trusts him, and that is a positive. Young players need opportunities, and Nyoni has shown that he deserves to be involved.

But there is a difference between trusting a youngster and relying on him too heavily.

Liverpool need to make sure he gets the right amount of football, the right support and the opportunity to learn from experienced players.

There will be occasions when he needs a rest. There will be matches where the opposition or tactical situation calls for a different midfield combination.

That should not be viewed as a setback.

The aim is not simply to get the best out of Nyoni over the next few weeks. It is to help him become an important Liverpool player for many years.

And that requires patience.

My Verdict: Build the Midfield Around Nyoni, Don’t Make Him Carry It

I am genuinely excited about what Trey Nyoni could become.

His performances have been encouraging, his confidence is growing and he is showing qualities that Liverpool have been missing in midfield.

But the club cannot allow his emergence to become an excuse for failing to strengthen the position.

Liverpool need another midfielder, and I would argue that signing one should be an absolute priority.

Find someone who can provide defensive protection, physicality and experience. Give Nyoni the support he needs, and allow him to develop alongside players who can help him become even better.

Trey Nyoni could be the future of Liverpool’s midfield, but he should not be expected to carry it on his own.

Liverpool have found a young talent worth getting excited about. Now they must make sure they build the right team around him.
