Why Liverpool Supporters Hate Howard Webb

Liverpool supporters were once again left cursing another ‘big’ decision that referee Howard Webb got wrong as Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Webb has a history of upsetting the Anfield faithful with his officiating of Liverpool games and his latest performance has enraged the Liverpool supporters more than ever.

Webb decided not to award Liverpool their second penalty of the match when Suarez was upended in the Arsenal penalty box by Oxlade-Chamberlain, and his decision not to give Liverpool a second penalty robbed the Reds of an equaliser resulting in Liverpool exiting the FA Cup.

In December Webb failed to award Liverpool a penalty at Stamford Bridge when Eto’o kicked Suarez in the penalty box.

In the past five years Liverpool have lost 14 of the last 22 games he has officiated, winning just six.

Obviously you can’t blame a referee for every defeat and like Liverpool’s defeat to Arsenal Liverpool did have enough chances to win the game but unfortunately they proved wasteful with the usually prolific Daniel Sturridge the main culprit.

But although Liverpool missed numerous chances to win the game, the supporters endured added frustration with many of Webb’s decisions going against Liverpool. In the first half Webb booked three Liverpool players while Arsenal were allowed to get away with some rough treatment in their more physical approach to the game with only two players getting booked.

How Podolski never received a yellow card was the one of the biggest mysteries of the match as he committed numerous fouls including the foul on Suarez that resulted in Liverpool’s penalty.

The only grumble that Arsenal may have had was whether Gerrard should have been sent off for lunging challenge that many people thought should have earned the Liverpool captain a second yellow card.

It’s about time that Webb’s performances have been called into question and earned criticism from many quarters and not just from Liverpool supporters. Webb has been playing on his reputation for far too long and if he is too arrogant to have a look at his own performances then the FA should because he is getting too many ‘big’ decisions wrong.

Don’t forget the challenge on Cazorla in the box. The media didn’t make a big fuss about it but that should have been a penalty and could very be a sending off.

How about Skrtel’s neck-high challenge on Cazorla? Penalty + red card. Or Özil being blatantly blocked off? Penalty. Or Stirling laying a hand on the ref? Red card. But sorry, I forgot – you’re the victims….

Can’t you guys give it a rest, always looking to blame somebody or something. If your team were good enough you would have scored from open play, you had no trouble the week before, or have you used up your allowance. You can’t keep relying on penalties deserved or not.

    Not quite.. https://vine.co/v/M79Y9etj5nr

I understand Liverpool fans frustration, you should have had 2 penalties no doubt, but Suarez does dive for both of them so I have little sympathy.

Also from Webbs point of view it’s not so clear at all http://i.minus.com/irMVhlpuQdoq.gif

And twice against United I can remember he lost the game for Liverpool. The time he sent Mascherano off for doing less than Sterling did when he was just showing passion. And obviously the United vs Liverpool FA cup match that again got us knocked out of the cup and Ryan Babel got fined for posting a mocked-up picture of Webb wearing a United top.
How has this man been allowed for so long to get away with doing these things regularly when he so obviously dislikes Liverpool yet he’s given our big matches to ruin every season.

Unfortunately the rules give referees plenty of freedom to make game-altering decisions. In this most recent case, I am certain that Webb felt Suarez did not establish possession of the ball as he was required to for a foul, and he was not convinced that the force applied by Ox-C was “excessive”.

Premier league referees call games within the rules, but those rules do give them enough room to make calls that don’t always make sense to fans, and if they do have a bias they can easily exercise it.

As an Arsenal fan, I do have sympathy with Liverpool as we (Arsenal) have seen decisions like this go against us and we have referees that seem to have it in for us (Mike Dean).

Webb gave the first penalty where he had no room for subjectivity, Suarez clearly in possession, and clearly clipped by Podolski.

It would have been interesting if the two incidents had been reversed, with the more certain penalty second. I suspect he might have given them both.

Jebus lads can you get over it? Every team has decisions for and against them during any match, Gerard should have had two yellows, sterling put his hands on the ref which should be a straight red and Carzola was fouled in the box late on. We had the luck this time, dont go looking for conspiracies when they aren’t there!
Good luck in the rest of the season, hope you get 4th!

Talk about a myopic view arsenal fans have more than just one issue to complain about.
1 Gerrard should have been booked before he was booked just before the podolski tackle it was a tackle from behind end up kickin an Arsenal player on knee bring him down. Couldn’t book podolski for a similar tackle straight after Gerrard’s tackle.
Then there was the booking he got and the tackle on Ox near the end.
2 how about Sterling putting his hand on Webb check the laws of football should have been a red card no ifs our buts players can’t put a hand on a ref.
3 Now look at Skrtel’s tackle on Cozorla foot was at head level didn’t get the ball and caught Cazorla’s ankle penalty and possible dangerous play. The was another call for a block on Ozil running in to the box after trying for a one two same as or similar to the Ox on Suarez.
Liverpool should have been given a 2nd penalty but Arsenal should have got at least one penalty and Liverpool should have had 2 players sent.
So don’t say Arsenal had not much to complain about we had more to complain about than Liverpool did.
We also had to put up with 2-3 days of the media saying that it was the worst referring decision of all time.
Now let the abuse begin but the facts are there record for everyone who wants to be fair to see.

And an Arsenal player should have been sent off at the start of the game for nearly breaking Joe Allen’s ankle as he studded him from behind with the ball not an achievable target!! Saying that I have no problem with Arsenal and if we can’t win the league I hope you do!!

Patrick. I think you`ll find that it was Steven Bennett who sent Mascherano off ,and he was worse ref than Webb.
