Arne Slot has annoyed a lot of Liverpool FC supporters after claiming:
“We performed to the Liverpool standards in the Champions League this season.”
And honestly, it’s easy to see why fans reacted badly to that comment.
Because when people think of Liverpool in Europe, they think of deep runs, massive nights and genuinely competing to win the competition.
That’s the standard supporters have become used to over the years.
A lot of fans simply don’t believe this season matched that level.
Not because Liverpool were terrible in every game, but because there were too many performances where the team looked flat, lacked belief or failed to handle big moments properly.
That’s not what supporters associate with Liverpool in Europe.
Under Jürgen Klopp especially, Liverpool built a reputation in the Champions League for intensity, mentality and making top European sides fear coming to Anfield.
This season never really felt like that consistently.
That’s why Slot’s comments frustrated people.
Supporters don’t mind honesty after disappointing performances — in fact, most actually respect it.
But saying Liverpool performed to the club’s European standards feels completely disconnected from how many fans viewed the campaign.
Maybe Slot was trying to protect the players publicly.
Maybe he genuinely feels the team did enough.
But right now, with frustration already growing around the club, comments like that were always going to wind supporters up even more.

Stopped listening to him a long time ago. He doesn’t have a clue about the style of football we want and the standards we expect.
Agree, and thanks for your comment.
