Xabi Alonso continues to be linked with some of the biggest jobs in Europe and reports now suggest Chelsea FC are currently leading the race for him.
At the same time, there still doesn’t appear to be a final decision from Liverpool FC over the future of Arne Slot.
And honestly, that should worry Liverpool supporters.
Because if there’s even the slightest doubt internally about Slot long-term, Liverpool cannot afford to sit around while clubs like Chelsea move for Alonso.
Managers like him don’t become available very often.
What Alonso has done in management already has been massively impressive.
The way his teams play, the personality he carries and the connection he already has with Liverpool makes him feel like a natural fit for the club one day.
A lot of supporters probably hoped that day would come sooner rather than later.
The fear for Liverpool fans is simple.
If another top club gets him first, there’s no guarantee the opportunity comes around again.
Especially if he succeeds elsewhere.
That’s why the club need clarity quickly.
Either fully back Slot and make it clear he’s the long-term manager, or make a change before Liverpool end up watching one of their ideal candidates walk into another Premier League club.
Personally, I just think missing out on Alonso now would feel like a massive opportunity lost.
Especially with so many supporters already feeling disconnected from the current direction of the team.
