There’s definitely frustration building around Liverpool at the moment, with a lot of it aimed at Arne Slot and the way the team is performing.
But from what’s understood, the club hierarchy also feel some of the blame lies with the players as well, with a belief that not enough of them are giving the required level of effort right now.
And when you actually watch the games, it’s hard to fully disagree with that.
Liverpool go ahead in matches far too often and instead of kicking on, they drop off, lose control and let teams back into it.
It’s happened too many times this season.
Slot’s style in previous jobs was the opposite of that.
His teams were usually aggressive after scoring — looking for a second and third goal to kill games off.
That’s what made his Feyenoord side so effective.
But at Liverpool it just hasn’t clicked in the same way.
The intensity drops, the pressing fades and suddenly the opposition are back in the game.
That’s been a recurring issue.
From a fan point of view, it almost feels like either the message isn’t getting through properly or certain players aren’t carrying it out consistently enough.
Either way, the end result is the same on the pitch.
Slot will obviously take responsibility as the manager, but the players have to be held accountable too.
Because right now, Liverpool don’t look like a team that’s fully switched on for 90 minutes — and that’s costing them far too often.
