Chelsea’s Florian Wirtz Interest Will Alarm Liverpool Fans — But Slot Must Share the Blame

27 May

Fresh reports from Footy Insider claim Xabi Alonso is a huge admirer of Florian Wirtz and is now keen for Chelsea to attempt a sensational move for the German playmaker this summer.

Even more concerning for Liverpool supporters is the suggestion that Liverpool could reportedly be open to letting Wirtz leave for the right offer — despite publicly denying that possibility.

And honestly, if there is any truth to those reports, many Liverpool fans will be absolutely furious.

Wirtz was supposed to be one of the key faces of Liverpool’s future.

A player capable of bringing creativity, flair and excitement back to the team after such a disappointing campaign.

Technically gifted, intelligent and capable of producing moments of magic, Wirtz is viewed as one of Europe’s elite young attacking midfielders.

That is exactly why the idea of Liverpool even entertaining offers feels deeply worrying for supporters.

At the same time though, many fans would also admit they expected far more from Wirtz this season personally.

But a huge part of that frustration comes down to how he has been used under Arne Slot.

Too often Wirtz looked uncomfortable, isolated or restricted by Liverpool’s system.

Slot repeatedly deployed him in positions that never truly allowed him to play to his strengths.

Instead of building the attack around Wirtz’s creativity and movement, Liverpool’s football often became slow, rigid and overly cautious.

That style simply does not suit a player like him.

Wirtz thrives when:

  • Given freedom
  • Allowed quick combinations
  • Playing centrally between the lines
  • And surrounded by movement and attacking runners

Liverpool rarely looked structured that way this season.

As a result, many supporters feel Slot’s tactical approach has actually held Wirtz back rather than helping him flourish.

The reported interest from Chelsea also makes sense from Alonso’s perspective.

The former Liverpool FC midfielder knows Wirtz extremely well and understands exactly how devastating he can be when used correctly.

Their connection has long been obvious.

And if Alonso genuinely wants him, Chelsea immediately become a serious threat.

For Liverpool supporters though, the bigger concern is the message this would send.

After already losing:

  • Mohamed Salah
  • Andy Robertson
  • And potentially several other senior players this summer

fans desperately need reasons to believe in the future again.

Wirtz is supposed to be one of those reasons.

Of course, Liverpool would almost certainly deny wanting to sell publicly.

And transfer rumours at this stage of the summer should always be treated carefully.

But even the possibility of losing Wirtz will worry supporters massively.

Because while the German may not have fully exploded yet at Liverpool, many fans still believe the problem is less about the player himself — and far more about the system and manager currently around him.
