Fabrizio Romano Confirms Liverpool Contact Over Matheus Fernandes – Should the Reds Now Make Their Move?

28 Jun

Liverpool’s interest in Matheus Fernandes appears to be genuine.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Reds have made contact with West Ham regarding the talented midfielder, backing up reports first revealed by Anfield Watch earlier this month.
The question now is simple:
Should Liverpool take the next step and submit an official bid?

Liverpool’s Interest Is Clearly Serious
Transfer rumours often come and go.
However, when Fabrizio Romano confirms contact between clubs, supporters tend to take notice.
While discussions do not guarantee that a transfer will happen, they do suggest Liverpool are actively assessing whether a deal is possible.
It also indicates that Matheus Fernandes is a player who fits the profile Liverpool are looking for as they continue to reshape the squad under Andoni Iraola.

Why Fernandes Makes Sense
It is easy to understand why Liverpool admire the Portuguese midfielder.
Fernandes possesses many of the qualities modern football demands:
● Athleticism
● Technical ability
● Press resistance
● Energy
● Tactical versatility
Comfortable both in possession and without the ball, he has the profile of a midfielder capable of operating in the high-intensity system Iraola is expected to implement at Anfield.
At just 21 years old, he also offers significant room for further development.

The Iraola Factor
One reason the move feels logical is how well Fernandes appears suited to Iraola’s style.
Liverpool’s new head coach wants midfielders capable of:
● Winning the ball aggressively.
● Driving forward in transition.
● Covering large areas of the pitch.
● Playing with intensity.
Fernandes has already demonstrated those qualities, making him a natural fit for the football Liverpool are trying to build.

Is Another Midfielder Really Needed?
Some supporters may question whether Liverpool need another midfielder.
After all, the club already have:
● Florian Wirtz
● Alexis Mac Allister
● Ryan Gravenberch
● Dominik Szoboszlai
● Curtis Jones
● Stefan Bajčetić
● Wataru Endo
On paper, that looks like excellent depth.
However, football seasons are rarely played on paper.
Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion mean quality depth is essential if Liverpool are serious about competing across multiple competitions.

The Biggest Obstacle
If Liverpool decide to move beyond initial contact, convincing West Ham to sell is likely to be the biggest challenge.
The London club are under no obvious pressure to lose one of their promising young midfielders and would almost certainly demand a significant transfer fee.
Liverpool will therefore need to decide whether Fernandes represents enough of an upgrade to justify the investment.

Should Liverpool Bid?
In my view, the answer is yes—provided the valuation is sensible.
Matheus Fernandes has the age profile, technical quality and physical attributes that fit perfectly with Liverpool’s long-term strategy.
He may not arrive as an automatic starter, but he looks like exactly the type of player capable of developing into an important part of Iraola’s project over the coming years.
Sometimes the smartest signings are those made before everyone else realises just how good a player can become.
Liverpool appear to recognise that.
Now the question is whether they are prepared to take the next step.
