Calvin Ramsay could finally be handed the opportunity Liverpool supporters have been waiting for.
According to Ian Doyle, the Scottish full-back is expected to be given the chance to impress during Liverpool’s upcoming pre-season tour of the United States.
For Ramsay, it could represent the fresh start his Liverpool career has desperately needed.
A Career That Never Got Going
When Liverpool signed Ramsay from Aberdeen, there was genuine excitement surrounding one of Scotland’s brightest young defenders.
However, a combination of injuries and loan spells meant he never truly established himself at Anfield.
Last season brought further frustration.
Despite Liverpool experiencing injuries in defensive areas, Ramsay never looked close to breaking into Arne Slot’s plans.
Instead, opportunities went elsewhere, leaving many supporters wondering whether the club had already decided his future.
No Real Opportunity Under Slot
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Ramsay’s time under Slot was that he never seemed to receive a genuine opportunity to prove himself.
Supporters rarely saw him involved with the first team, even during periods when Liverpool’s squad was stretched.
It became increasingly difficult to judge his ability because he simply wasn’t playing.
For a young player still trying to establish himself, consistent opportunities are vital.
Unfortunately, they never arrived.
A Fresh Start Under Iraola
Everything changes with a new manager.
Andoni Iraola has built a reputation for giving players opportunities if they impress on the training ground and during pre-season.
There is no guarantee Ramsay will remain at Liverpool beyond the summer.
But unlike last year, he now has the chance to make his case directly to the coaching staff.
Pre-season tours often provide young and fringe players with the perfect platform to show what they can offer.
The Timing Could Not Be Better
Ramsay’s opportunity also comes at an important time.
With Conor Bradley still recovering from injury, Liverpool are short of natural right-back options behind Jeremie Frimpong.
A strong pre-season from Ramsay could significantly improve his chances of remaining part of the squad.
Even if Liverpool ultimately decide to loan or sell him, impressive performances would only strengthen his position.
A Point to Prove
Few players will arrive in the United States with greater motivation.
Ramsay has spent much of his Liverpool career battling injuries and waiting for opportunities that never truly came.
Now, at last, he appears set to receive a genuine audition.
Whether he can take that opportunity remains to be seen.
But after everything he has endured since arriving at Anfield, it is encouraging to see him finally being given the chance to show what he can do.
For Ramsay, this pre-season may prove to be the most important of his Liverpool career.
