Liverpool’s pre-season has been full of positives so far.
The intensity has returned.
Young players have impressed.
And supporters are beginning to see the early signs of what Andoni Iraola wants from his team.
There is, however, one question that continues to divide opinion.
Are Liverpool’s World Cup stars getting enough minutes before the Premier League season begins?
Four Key Players Still Waiting
Ryan Gravenberch.
Alexander Isak.
Jeremy Jacquet.
Florian Wirtz.
All four are expected to feature later this week, but after missing the opening fixtures against Sunderland and Wrexham, they are now only likely to receive brief appearances against Leeds United.
That has inevitably prompted debate among supporters.
With the Premier League only weeks away, is that enough preparation?
Why Iraola Is Being Cautious
From Iraola’s perspective, the decision makes perfect sense.
All four players have only recently returned following their World Cup commitments.
International tournaments demand enormous physical and mental energy.
The last thing Liverpool need is to rush key players back into competitive action and risk injuries before the season has even begun.
Modern football increasingly relies on careful workload management.
Managers no longer expect players to jump straight back into 90-minute matches after a major tournament.
Could They Be Underprepared?
The counterargument is equally valid.
Pre-season is about more than fitness.
It is about rhythm.
Sharpness.
Building relationships with team-mates.
And, perhaps most importantly this summer, learning a completely new tactical system.
Gravenberch, Isak, Jacquet and Wirtz are expected to become some of Liverpool’s most important players.
The fewer minutes they have under Iraola before the Premier League begins, the greater the possibility that they start the season slightly behind the rest of the squad.
Learning a New System
This is particularly relevant because Iraola’s football differs significantly from what Liverpool produced last season.
The pressing triggers.
The positioning.
The rotations.
The intensity.
Everything demands repetition on the training ground and in matches.
Nothing fully replaces competitive minutes.
That is why some supporters are beginning to wonder whether a few brief cameos against Leeds will be enough.
Trust the Process
Personally, I think Iraola has earned the benefit of the doubt.
He has shown throughout his coaching career that he values physical conditioning and rarely takes unnecessary risks.
If he believes these players need another week before increasing their workload, Liverpool supporters should probably trust that judgement.
After all, a fully fit Florian Wirtz or Alexander Isak in September is far more valuable than a player who suffers a setback trying to play too much in July.
A Long Season Ahead
Liverpool are not preparing for one match.
They are preparing for a campaign that could stretch across nearly 60 games.
If sacrificing a few pre-season minutes helps ensure these players remain available when the biggest matches arrive, it could prove to be the right decision.
The Premier League title is not won in July.
But it can certainly be damaged by injuries picked up in pre-season.
The Bigger Picture
Supporters naturally want to see Liverpool’s biggest stars on the pitch as quickly as possible.
Watching Wirtz behind Isak, with Gravenberch driving through midfield and Jacquet settling into defence, is something every Red is looking forward to.
The wait is frustrating.
But perhaps it is also sensible.
If Iraola gets these four players to the start of the season fully fit, mentally refreshed and ready to peak over the months ahead, Liverpool may ultimately benefit from his cautious approach.
Sometimes the hardest decision for a manager is not playing his best players.
Sometimes it is knowing when not to.
