Liverpool’s recruitment team may be working hard to bring new players to Anfield, but another challenge is quietly approaching.
By this time next year, the Reds could lose several experienced and established players for nothing if decisions are not made.
The following players all have just one year remaining on their contracts:
● Virgil van Dijk (35)
● Wataru Endo (33)
● Joe Gomez (29)
● Alisson Becker (33)
● Curtis Jones (25)
● Kostas Tsimikas (30)
● Harvey Elliott (23)
That raises an interesting question for Liverpool supporters:
Who would you sell, who would you renew, and who would you allow to leave when their contracts expire?
Virgil van Dijk
Even at 35, Van Dijk remains one of the world’s elite centre-backs and Liverpool’s captain.
The question is less about ability and more about planning for the future.
Would you offer him another deal, or allow him to complete his final season before moving on?
Alisson Becker
Alisson is still capable of producing match-winning performances and is one of Liverpool’s most influential players.
However, with his contract entering its final year and the club needing to plan ahead, Liverpool face another difficult decision.
Curtis Jones
At 25, Jones is entering the prime years of his career.
He is homegrown, versatile and still has room to improve.
If Liverpool are looking to build around younger players, extending his contract would make plenty of sense.
Harvey Elliott
Elliott remains one of the squad’s most technically gifted players, but regular opportunities have often been difficult to come by.
If a strong offer arrived, would it be time to cash in, or should Liverpool continue believing in his long-term potential?
Joe Gomez
Gomez’s quality has never really been questioned.
His fitness record, however, continues to make long-term planning difficult.
Does Liverpool persist with one of their longest-serving players, or decide the time is right to move on?
Kostas Tsimikas
Tsimikas has been a reliable squad player throughout his Liverpool career, but with younger options emerging, should Liverpool seek a transfer while they still can?
Wataru Endo
Endo has earned enormous respect for his professionalism and attitude.
At 33, though, Liverpool may decide now is the right time to refresh the midfield.
Would you sell while he still has value, or keep his experience around the squad?
My Choices
If I were making the decisions today, this is what I’d do:
Sell:
● Wataru Endo
● Joe Gomez
● Kostas Tsimikas
● Harvey Elliott
Renew:
● Curtis Jones
Allow to see out their contracts:
● Virgil van Dijk
● Alisson Becker
Van Dijk and Alisson have earned the right to finish their Liverpool careers on their own terms, while Jones still feels like an important part of the club’s future.
Over to You
Now it’s your turn.
If you were Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola, what decisions would you make?
● Who are you renewing?
● Who are you selling?
● Who would you allow to leave on a free next summer?
With so many major contract decisions approaching, Liverpool supporters are sure to have plenty of different opinions.
