Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo saga has taken another major twist.
According to TEAMtalk, Gakpo has made it clear to Liverpool that he wants to leave Anfield this summer and join Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham revolution. The report claims his representatives have agreed personal terms in principle with Spurs and have spoken directly with Liverpool’s hierarchy to make the player’s position clear.
This is a significant development because Liverpool have previously been reluctant to let Gakpo leave.
Gakpo reportedly wants a bigger role
The biggest reason behind Gakpo’s reported desire to leave appears to be his concern over his role under Andoni Iraola.
TEAMtalk reports that the Dutchman doesn’t want to spend his prime years as a squad player and believes Tottenham could offer him a more prominent role.
And you can understand why the situation has become complicated.
Liverpool now have Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha, Victor Munoz and potentially Bradley Barcola competing for attacking positions.
Gakpo is versatile enough to play across the front line, but competition for places is going to be fierce.
De Zerbi wants Gakpo
The report claims Roberto De Zerbi has personally played an important role in convincing Gakpo that Tottenham is the right move for him.
Spurs have been looking for attacking reinforcements and Gakpo’s versatility makes him particularly attractive.
He can play from the left, operate centrally and contribute goals and assists.
Sky Sports previously reported that De Zerbi wanted at least one wide attacker and that Tottenham were interested in Gakpo, although Liverpool were not prepared to sell without a replacement arriving first.
Now, however, the situation appears to have moved forward.
Liverpool still have a big decision to make
Even if Gakpo wants to leave, that doesn’t mean Liverpool will simply allow him to go.
That’s crucial.
The Dutch international still has four years remaining on his contract, giving Liverpool a strong negotiating position.
Liverpool have also reportedly been reluctant to sell unless they strengthen their own attack first.
That makes the ongoing pursuit of Barcola particularly important.
If Liverpool sign Barcola — and potentially another winger — the club could be more comfortable allowing Gakpo to depart.
Could Barcola replace Gakpo?
This is where the transfer dominoes become fascinating.
Liverpool want Barcola.
Tottenham want Gakpo.
PSG have just agreed a verbal deal for Mika Godts.
And now reports claim Gakpo has told Liverpool he wants to join Spurs.
Could everything be connected?
It certainly feels possible.
If Barcola arrives at Anfield, Liverpool would have a direct replacement for some of the attacking qualities Gakpo provides, while also adding a younger and extremely explosive winger.
But there’s still a risk in losing Gakpo.
I wouldn’t be rushing to sell him
Personally, I’d still be reluctant to let Gakpo go.
Yes, Liverpool have incredible attacking talent.
Yes, Barcola would be a fantastic addition.
But Gakpo is proven Premier League quality and his ability to play multiple positions could become incredibly important over a long season.
And with Hugo Ekitike facing a lengthy absence, Gakpo’s ability to play through the middle could be particularly valuable alongside Isak.
Liverpool need depth.
They can’t afford to have a brilliant starting XI but very little quality beyond it.
But what if Gakpo really wants out?
That’s the difficult part.
If a player genuinely believes his future lies elsewhere, Liverpool have to consider whether keeping him is the right decision.
And if Tottenham are prepared to pay a significant fee — reports have previously put Liverpool’s valuation around the £70m mark — the decision becomes even more complicated.
Liverpool could potentially use that money to fund another attacking signing.
But they need to be careful not to weaken the squad simply to balance the books.
This could be one of the biggest decisions of the summer
Just a few weeks ago, the idea of Gakpo leaving Liverpool seemed unlikely.
Now we’re hearing that the player has reportedly made his position clear to the club.
Tottenham want him.
De Zerbi reportedly wants him.
Gakpo reportedly wants the move.
But Liverpool still have the final say.
And I think the next few days could tell us everything.
If Barcola arrives, does Liverpool finally give Gakpo the green light?
Or does Iraola convince him that he still has an important role to play at Anfield?
Either way, this transfer story is certainly not going away.
And with Liverpool’s attack already undergoing such a dramatic transformation, Cody Gakpo could be the next major piece to leave the puzzle.
