Could the first piece of the puzzle finally have fallen into place?
Paris Saint-Germain have officially announced the signing of Ferran Torres from Barcelona, with the Spanish international putting pen to paper on a contract until 2031 and taking the number nine shirt.
And while this is a PSG signing rather than a Liverpool one, it could have major implications for the Reds’ pursuit of Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.
PSG are adding another attacker
Torres arrives at PSG after an impressive season with Barcelona and joins an already stacked attacking department.
His arrival gives Luis Enrique another high-quality forward, but it also raises an obvious question:
Where does that leave Barcola and Mbaye?
Liverpool have been heavily linked with both players, with Barcola reportedly the club’s priority target and Mbaye also attracting significant interest.
PSG signing another attacker could make it easier for the French champions to sanction departures.
And that is where Liverpool supporters should be watching very closely.
Barcola could be the big winner
Barcola is the player Liverpool fans are desperate to see arrive at Anfield.
Reports have suggested that the 23-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Liverpool, although the two clubs still need to reach an agreement over the transfer fee.
PSG have previously placed a huge valuation on their winger, but their willingness to spend heavily on attacking reinforcements could eventually strengthen Liverpool’s negotiating position.
The more attackers PSG bring in, the harder it becomes to justify keeping everyone happy.
And Liverpool could be ready to take advantage.
And then there’s Ibrahim Mbaye
Mbaye is another fascinating situation.
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of PSG’s exciting young talents and Liverpool have reportedly spoken to his representatives about a potential move.
A double swoop for Barcola and Mbaye would obviously be extremely ambitious, but PSG’s changing attacking options could potentially make it more realistic.
That doesn’t mean Liverpool will sign both.
It doesn’t even mean PSG are definitely ready to sell either.
But Torres arriving certainly changes the dynamics.
Could this be the beginning of the domino effect?
This is where the phrase “the first domino has fallen” comes from.
PSG reportedly wanted to strengthen their attack before allowing Barcola to leave.
They have now added Torres.
They have also agreed a deal for Ajax winger Mika Godts.
Suddenly, PSG are adding significant competition in the exact area where Liverpool are trying to recruit.
That could ultimately lead to a chain reaction:
Torres joins PSG ➡️ Godts joins PSG ➡️ PSG have more attacking options ➡️ Barcola becomes more expendable ➡️ Liverpool make their move.
Of course, football transfers rarely happen that neatly.
But the pieces are certainly beginning to move.
Imagine Liverpool’s attack with Barcola
This is why supporters are getting excited.
Liverpool already have:
Alexander Isak
Florian Wirtz
Cody Gakpo
Federico Chiesa
Rio Ngumoha
Add Bradley Barcola to that group and Iraola would have an extraordinary collection of attacking talent.
Barcola brings something Liverpool don’t have in abundance:
Explosive pace and direct running from wide areas.
He can receive the ball, turn defenders and attack space at frightening speed.
That could be perfect for Iraola’s aggressive football.
Could we get Barcola AND Mbaye?
Now that would be something.
Barcola could immediately challenge for a starting role, while Mbaye would represent a longer-term investment in another potentially elite attacker.
Liverpool would be adding both proven top-level quality and huge potential.
But PSG will obviously want to protect their own interests.
And the reported prices involved mean Liverpool would have to spend an enormous amount to sign both.
So I’d still view a double deal as unlikely.
Barcola feels like the priority.
Mbaye could be the bonus.
Liverpool fans should be watching PSG closely
Today’s announcement doesn’t mean Barcola is about to become a Liverpool player.
It doesn’t mean Mbaye is either.
But it is another important development in a transfer saga that appears to be gathering pace.
PSG have now signed Ferran Torres on a deal running until 2031.
And with Godts also reportedly arriving, their attacking department is becoming even more crowded.
For Liverpool, that can only be encouraging.
The first domino has fallen.
Now we wait to see whether Barcola is the next one.
