Iraola Has Made His Liverpool Demands — Now FSG Must Back Him

19 Aug

Liverpool’s transfer window could be about to enter another crucial stage, with a new report claiming Andoni Iraola’s management team want two midfielders and two attackers before the window closes.

According to IndyKaila News, Liverpool’s management are demanding four more additions — two midfielders and two attackers.

And if that is genuinely the message coming from inside the club, Liverpool’s owners need to listen.

Iraola needs the tools to succeed

There is no point appointing a manager with a clear tactical philosophy and then failing to give him the squad required to implement it.

Iraola wants Liverpool to play with intensity.

He wants aggressive pressing, quick transitions and attacking movement.

But that requires quality and depth.

Liverpool cannot expect to compete on all fronts if the manager doesn’t have enough players capable of maintaining that intensity throughout a long season.

Two midfielders makes sense

This is probably the area I’d be most concerned about.

Curtis Jones now appears to be heading for Inter, with Fabrizio Romano reporting a €35m package agreement.

That potentially leaves Liverpool needing more depth in the middle of the pitch.

Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are excellent players, but Liverpool are going to have a huge number of matches to play.

And if Iraola wants to rotate while maintaining his intensity, three or four established midfielders aren’t enough.

Liverpool need competition.

They need someone who can protect the defence.

They need someone who can control games.

And they need another player capable of providing energy when the schedule becomes relentless.

Two attackers could transform Liverpool

Then there’s the attack.

Liverpool already have Wirtz and Isak, but the rumours surrounding Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye suggest the club aren’t finished there.

And if the reported plan really is to sign two attackers, that could completely transform Iraola’s options.

Imagine having:

Barcola – Wirtz – Isak

with Gakpo, Ngumoha, Mbaye and Chiesa competing for places.

Suddenly Liverpool have genuine depth.

And, importantly, they have different types of attackers.

This is where Ngumoha becomes interesting

One of the biggest positives from this summer has been the emergence of Rio Ngumoha.

He’s reportedly going to have a significant role this season, potentially even operating more regularly from the right wing.

That doesn’t mean Liverpool shouldn’t sign another winger.

Quite the opposite.

Competition could help Ngumoha develop.

At 17, he shouldn’t be expected to carry Liverpool’s attack. He should be given opportunities while having experienced players around him.

Now FSG have to back the manager

This is ultimately the key point.

Liverpool have invested heavily already.

But if the management team really believes that two midfielders and two attackers are required, then the club needs to seriously consider whether that demand is justified.

The objective shouldn’t simply be:

“We’ve spent enough.”

It should be:

“Have we built the squad capable of winning the biggest trophies?”

Those are two very different questions.

Liverpool cannot afford to leave Iraola short

The signs under Iraola have been encouraging.

The Como games showed a team trying to play with greater intensity and defensive structure.

Jacquet and Araújo have strengthened the defence.

Wirtz and Isak have already shown glimpses of an exciting partnership.

Ngumoha looks ready to contribute.

But there are still obvious areas where the squad could be improved.

And if the manager believes four more players are needed, Liverpool’s hierarchy should at least explore every possibility.

Two midfielders.

Two attackers.

Four more pieces for Iraola’s puzzle.

Liverpool have already shown this summer that they’re willing to spend serious money.

Now they need to make sure they finish the job.

Because there is no point giving Andoni Iraola the keys to a potentially brilliant Liverpool side and then leaving him short of the players he needs.

Back the manager. Build the squad. Then let’s see what Iraola can really do.
