Liverpool’s squad depth has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding the club since the beginning of the season.
And now, according to IndyKaila News, Liverpool’s owners have given Andoni Iraola the green light to use youngsters and fringe players heavily in both the League Cup and FA Cup.
The reason?
The squad is simply too small.
If accurate, this could have a huge impact on Liverpool’s season.
Liverpool have a problem
There has been plenty of discussion about Liverpool’s squad depth following the opening weeks of the campaign.
The Reds are expected to compete on four fronts.
The Premier League.
The Champions League.
The FA Cup.
The League Cup.
That’s a huge workload for any squad.
And with injuries, suspensions and fatigue inevitable over the course of a season, Iraola is going to have to manage his players carefully.
The cup competitions could therefore provide an opportunity.
The youngsters could get their chance
This could be fantastic news for Liverpool’s academy.
Players such as Trey Nyoni, Lewis Koumas, James McConnell and other young talents could be given significant opportunities.
And this isn’t simply about giving youngsters a few minutes here and there.
If the report is accurate, Iraola has effectively been told to unleash them in the domestic cups.
That could mean starting games.
Playing big minutes.
And being given the responsibility of helping Liverpool progress.
Lewis Koumas has already shown what he can do
Koumas has already provided an encouraging glimpse of what he could offer.
His cameo against Newcastle was full of energy.
He pressed.
He chased everything.
He made himself difficult to play against.
And he looked completely fearless.
Giving players like that more opportunities could be one of the biggest positives to come from Liverpool’s current squad situation.
Trey Nyoni could be another big winner
Nyoni is another player supporters should be watching closely.
The young midfielder has been knocking on the door of first-team football and has already shown plenty of promise.
With Curtis Jones now gone and Liverpool’s midfield options stretched, this could be a huge opportunity.
Instead of simply sitting on the bench, Nyoni could potentially get regular minutes in the cups.
And that’s exactly how young players develop.
You don’t become ready for first-team football by playing youth football forever.
At some point, you have to be thrown into the deep end.
Iraola will have to manage it carefully
There is, however, a balance to be found.
Liverpool shouldn’t simply abandon the FA Cup and League Cup.
These are still major competitions.
But Iraola needs to protect his most important players for the Premier League and Champions League.
Using the youngsters doesn’t necessarily mean treating the cups as unimportant.
It could actually be an opportunity to develop the squad while managing the workload of the senior players.
The academy could become incredibly important
One thing I like about this situation is that it could force Liverpool to trust their academy.
Liverpool have always had a proud tradition of producing local talent.
The current generation now has an opportunity to follow the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Trent Alexander-Arnold by making their mark on the first team.
And with the squad stretched, those opportunities could come much sooner than expected.
But it also highlights a problem
We shouldn’t lose sight of the reason this is apparently happening.
The squad is too small.
If the owners really have decided that Iraola should rely heavily on youngsters in the domestic cups because there simply aren’t enough senior players, then that should also be a warning.
Liverpool want to compete for everything.
But you need a squad capable of doing that.
Youngsters can help.
They can surprise you.
They can become stars.
But you cannot expect a group of inexperienced players to carry the burden of a four-competition season.
Could this be a blessing in disguise?
Perhaps.
Liverpool might have been forced into giving opportunities to players who otherwise would have had to wait much longer.
One of them could take their chance and become a genuine first-team option.
That’s happened at Liverpool before.
And there is no reason it can’t happen again.
Iraola has been given the green light
According to Indykaila News, the message from the owners is clear:
Use the kids.
Use the fringe players.
Manage the senior stars.
And try to navigate the domestic cups with the squad Liverpool currently have.
If that’s the plan, I’m actually excited to see what happens.
Because Liverpool have some seriously talented youngsters waiting for their opportunity.
The squad may be too small.
But perhaps this gives Iraola the perfect excuse to unleash the next generation of Liverpool stars.
