Sir Kenny Dalglish Honoured With the PFA Merit Award

25 Aug

There are very few people who can genuinely be described as Liverpool royalty.

Sir Kenny Dalglish is undoubtedly one of them.

And now another deserved honour has been added to his incredible list of achievements, with Dalglish named as the winner of the PFA Merit Award.

It is difficult to think of anyone more deserving.

King Kenny

For Liverpool supporters, Kenny Dalglish isn’t simply a legendary footballer.

He’s part of the fabric of the football club.

He arrived at Liverpool from Celtic in 1977 and went on to become one of the greatest players ever to wear the famous red shirt.

His intelligence.

His technique.

His vision.

His ability to score and create goals.

Everything about Dalglish made him special.

And he didn’t stop there.

He went on to become one of Liverpool’s greatest managers too.

A remarkable Liverpool career

Dalglish’s trophy cabinet tells you almost everything you need to know.

As a Liverpool player, he won eight league titles, three European Cups and numerous domestic trophies.

Then, as manager, he continued the success.

He guided Liverpool to multiple league titles and domestic cups, becoming the first player-manager to win the English league and FA Cup double.

That’s an extraordinary legacy.

But numbers alone don’t explain why Liverpool supporters love him so much.

More than football

Dalglish’s importance to Liverpool goes beyond what happened on the pitch.

He became an enormous figure for the city and its people, particularly through some of Liverpool’s darkest moments.

His support for the families affected by the Hillsborough disaster will never be forgotten.

He attended funerals.

He stood alongside grieving families.

He understood that Liverpool Football Club was about much more than football.

That connection between Dalglish and the supporters is something that is difficult to replicate.

A true Liverpool icon

When Liverpool supporters talk about their greatest ever players, Dalglish is almost always near the top of the list.

And when you combine his playing career with his achievements as manager, his case becomes even stronger.

He wasn’t simply a great player.

He was a great manager.

A leader.

A winner.

And, above all, someone who understood what Liverpool Football Club meant to its supporters.

A thoroughly deserved honour

The PFA Merit Award is another recognition of a career that has given so much to football.

And I think it’s particularly fitting that the award comes now.

Football changes constantly.

Players come and go.

Managers come and go.

Tactics evolve.

But legends remain.

And Sir Kenny Dalglish will always remain one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever legends.

Congratulations, King Kenny.

A Liverpool legend.

A football legend.

And a thoroughly deserving winner of the PFA Merit Award.
