Liverpool have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Lamine Camara, according to Ben Jacobs.
And considering the questions surrounding Liverpool’s midfield, this is a development that should certainly get the attention of Reds supporters.
Camara is exactly the type of player who could make sense for Andoni Iraola’s squad.
The question is whether Liverpool decide to take advantage of the opportunity.
Liverpool need another midfielder
The need for midfield reinforcement has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding Liverpool for much of the summer.
The Reds have plenty of technical quality, but there are still questions about the balance of the midfield.
Liverpool can dominate possession, but the 2-2 draw with Newcastle highlighted how vulnerable they can be when possession is lost.
There needs to be more protection for the defence.
There needs to be more physicality.
And there needs to be somebody capable of winning the ball back and starting attacks.
That’s why Camara is so interesting.
Camara fits the profile
The Senegal international is still only 22 and has already gained valuable experience at the highest level.
He’s energetic, aggressive and comfortable in possession.
He can play deeper in midfield but isn’t simply a player who sits in front of the defence.
Camara is capable of carrying the ball forward, progressing play and contributing defensively.
That versatility could be extremely useful to Iraola.
Imagine Camara alongside Gravenberch
One potential midfield combination that really interests me is Camara alongside Ryan Gravenberch.
Gravenberch has the ability to carry the ball and drive Liverpool forward.
Camara could potentially provide more defensive security alongside him.
That could give Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai greater freedom to concentrate on the attacking side of the game.
It would also give Iraola more options depending on the opponent.
Why have Liverpool been offered him?
That’s the intriguing part.
If Camara’s representatives have actively offered the player to Liverpool, then perhaps there is an opportunity here that the club weren’t expecting.
Liverpool have already been linked with him, so this isn’t necessarily a completely new name on the recruitment team’s radar.
But an opportunity being presented to you is very different from simply monitoring a player.
Now Liverpool have a decision to make.
Chelsea could complicate things
Liverpool aren’t the only club who have been linked with Camara.
Chelsea have reportedly shown an interest too.
And that’s something Liverpool need to be wary of.
If they genuinely believe Camara can solve a problem in Iraola’s squad, they can’t afford to spend weeks thinking about it while another Premier League club gets the deal done.
This is a player who could potentially become significantly more expensive if several clubs enter the race.
Liverpool shouldn’t overthink it
There is, of course, a difference between being offered a player and deciding that he’s the right player.
Liverpool shouldn’t sign Camara simply because his representatives have approached them.
The recruitment team have to be convinced.
But if they are?
Get the deal done.
Liverpool have already spent heavily on attacking talent this summer.
Alexander Isak arrived for £125m.
Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola have also represented huge investments.
Now the club need to make sure the team behind those attacking players is strong enough to get the best out of them.
My verdict
I would be very interested in this one.
Camara is young.
He’s talented.
He fits the physical profile required for English football.
And most importantly, he plays in an area where Liverpool need more options.
If Ben Jacobs is correct and Liverpool have genuinely been offered the opportunity to sign him, I hope the Reds at least investigate the possibility.
Because sometimes the best transfer opportunities aren’t the ones you spend months chasing.
Sometimes they come directly to you.
Lamine Camara could be one of those opportunities.
Liverpool just need to decide whether they’re brave enough to take it.
