Trent Alexander-Arnold could make a sensational return to Liverpool — but only if the Reds can agree a deal with Real Madrid.
The boyhood Liverpool fan left after two decades to join Real Madrid, ending an emotional chapter of his career. But the story may not be finished.
The boyhood club
Trent was one of Liverpool’s own. He came through the academy, won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup, and became one of the greatest creative full-backs in the club’s history.
His departure was always going to hurt.
Trent has spoken about the abuse he received from sections of the Liverpool support, admitting that it affected him while saying he understands the disappointment and anger.
Despite that, his love for Liverpool remains. He still watches the Reds, and there are now claims he could eventually return.
Real Madrid haven’t worked out as planned
Trent moved to Spain believing he was taking the next step in his career. Instead, his first season brought limited minutes, injuries and competition for his place. He started only 14 La Liga matches.
Now, Denzel Dumfries has arrived at Real Madrid, creating even more competition at right-back.
New manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly a fan of Trent, and Real Madrid currently have no intention of selling him.
That is Liverpool’s biggest obstacle.
Liverpool need him again?
Liverpool have struggled to find the right balance at right-back. Jeremie Frimpong endured a difficult opening game against Newcastle, while Trent’s passing and crossing would offer a different dimension.
Then there is Alexander Isak.
Liverpool have spent £125 million on their new striker, and a player like Isak needs service. Few players can deliver from deep quite like Trent.
Imagine Isak attacking a Trent cross again.
It could be devastating.
Could the relationship be repaired?
Trent knows how supporters felt about his departure, and he has admitted that their reaction hurt him.
But time changes things.
If he returned and helped Liverpool win trophies, would fans still hold a grudge? I’m not convinced they would.
The unfinished story
Trent left to fulfil a dream: playing for Real Madrid. Nobody can take that away from him.
But if the move fails to match his expectations, he may eventually realise that nowhere feels quite like home.
Liverpool, meanwhile, could decide that bringing back one of their greatest academy products makes sense.
That would create one of the most remarkable Premier League reunions imaginable.
Could Liverpool actually do it?
Real Madrid would have to agree.
Liverpool would need to negotiate a transfer or loan and make the finances work. Madrid invested in bringing Trent to Spain, so they will not give him away.
Still, football changes quickly. A player’s role can change, a manager can leave and a seemingly impossible transfer can suddenly become realistic.
Trent’s situation is worth monitoring.
My verdict
If Liverpool could bring Trent back at a sensible price, I’d seriously consider it.
Not just because of sentiment. Liverpool need quality, creativity and better delivery from the right. They also need to give Isak the service required to justify that £125m investment.
Trent could provide it.
There would need to be an honest conversation between the player and supporters, but football sometimes offers the chance to rewrite a story.
The boyhood club.
The broken relationship.
The unfinished story.
Maybe one day, Trent Alexander-Arnold will walk through those Anfield doors again.
If Liverpool can strike a deal with Real Madrid, that day could arrive sooner than expected.
Never say never.

I couldn’t face losing a player for free (well, £10 million or whatever they paid) and then having to buy him back. We’d have lost him for a year AND then paid out money for him as well 😐
A loan deal would be fascinating – definitely wouldn’t buy him though.
