Liverpool Fans Seem to Prefer Lamine Camara Over Alex Scott – And I Can See Why

14 Oct

If the majority of Liverpool fans would rather see Lamine Camara arrive at Anfield than Alex Scott, I can understand the thinking.

Both are talented midfielders. Both have been linked with Liverpool. And both could offer something to Andoni Iraola’s team.

But for me, there is a bigger question here.

Does Liverpool’s midfield need another good footballer, or does it need a different type of midfielder?

That is where Camara becomes particularly interesting.

Liverpool went through the summer without signing a new midfielder despite selling Curtis Jones to Inter Milan. Trey Nyoni’s progress played a part in that decision, but supporters are still looking at the squad and wondering whether another addition is needed.

And judging by the reaction to these two names, plenty of fans seem to believe Camara is the answer.

Why Camara might be the better fit

Camara is the sort of midfielder who could give Liverpool something different.

The Monaco midfielder is known for his energy, aggression and ability to compete in the middle of the pitch. He is comfortable getting involved defensively, but he also has the technical quality to help Liverpool build attacks.

That combination is what makes him appealing.

Liverpool already have players who can carry the ball forward and contribute creatively. What they sometimes lack is the balance that allows those players to express themselves without leaving the midfield exposed.

I want Liverpool to sign a midfielder who can win the ball, cover ground and help control games.

Camara looks an interesting option for that kind of role.

David Ornstein has confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the Senegal international, while reports in September suggested he could be valued at around £47 million. Chelsea also explored a move for him before their proposed deal collapsed.

That does not mean Liverpool are guaranteed to return for him, but there is a genuine reason his name keeps appearing in discussions about the club’s midfield plans.

Alex Scott is a good player, too

I wouldn’t want this to turn into an article dismissing Scott, because I think he has plenty to offer.

The Bournemouth midfielder has Premier League experience, knows the demands of English football and has worked with Iraola during the manager’s time on the south coast.

That connection could be useful if Liverpool were to pursue him.

Scott is versatile and capable of contributing both in possession and defensively. He could also provide a valuable homegrown option in the squad.

But I do wonder whether he is the type of midfielder Liverpool need most urgently.

Recent analysis of the club’s recruitment has highlighted the distinction between Scott’s more box-to-box profile and the need for a specialist defensive midfielder.

That is the key point for me.

Scott might improve the squad, but would he solve the problem Liverpool supporters are worried about?

I’m not completely convinced.

Liverpool need to get the balance right

This is where I think the debate becomes interesting.

Liverpool have Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, with Nyoni pushing for more opportunities.

There is quality there.

But having quality midfielders does not automatically mean you have the right balance.

I want to see Liverpool become more difficult to play through. I want the midfield to protect the defence, win second balls and give the more creative players the freedom to influence matches.

Camara could offer that extra aggression and defensive energy.

And if he can adapt to the Premier League, he might allow the players around him to concentrate more on what they do best.

That is why I can understand supporters favouring him.

It isn’t necessarily about saying Camara is the better footballer in every department. It is about whether his particular strengths address Liverpool’s needs more directly.

The price still matters

There is one thing Liverpool cannot ignore, though.

The club reportedly assessed both players as part of its wider midfield recruitment work, with TEAMtalk previously suggesting that deals for the likes of Camara and Scott could cost £50 million or considerably more.

That is a lot of money, especially when Liverpool also have other areas to consider.

I wouldn’t want the club to spend heavily on Camara simply because supporters prefer him in a poll. Recruitment has to be about more than popularity.

Liverpool need to be certain about the role he would play, how he fits alongside Mac Allister and Gravenberch, and whether he can handle the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League.

If those answers are positive, I can see the appeal.

If not, Liverpool should keep looking.

My verdict: I can see why Camara is winning the argument

For me, the most important thing is that Liverpool get the right profile rather than simply another name.

Scott would be an interesting signing, particularly because of his Premier League experience and relationship with Iraola.

But Camara looks like a particularly intriguing option if Liverpool want more defensive bite and energy in the middle of the pitch.

And that is why I can understand the majority leaning towards him.

Liverpool need to build a midfield that can compete physically, protect the defence and still move the ball forward quickly. Camara could help provide that balance, although he would still need time to adapt.

I wouldn’t write Alex Scott off, but if I had to choose based on the type of midfielder Liverpool may need, I can see the argument for Lamine Camara.

Now it is up to Liverpool’s recruitment team to decide whether that interest becomes something more.

Because if the Reds are going to strengthen their midfield, I want them to sign someone who genuinely changes what the team can do.

Not just someone who adds another name to the squad.
