There is finally some really encouraging news on Conor Bradley, and I think Liverpool supporters will be delighted to hear it.
After months of waiting, the right-back is approaching the final stages of his recovery from the serious knee injury he suffered against Arsenal in January. According to Lewis Steele, Bradley is back working on grass and hopes to join some team sessions in the near future.
That is a significant step forward.
It has been a long road back for the Northern Ireland international, and I don’t think we should underestimate how difficult it must have been to spend so much time watching from the sidelines.
But he is getting closer now, and Liverpool could certainly do with having him available again.
Liverpool have missed Bradley
I have said before that I see Bradley as a player who could make the right-back position his own at Liverpool.
He brings energy, aggression and a willingness to get forward. He isn’t afraid to get stuck into a challenge, and there is an intensity to his game that I really like.
Liverpool have had to find alternatives during his absence, with Ronald Araújo and Jeremie Frimpong offering different options. But neither situation has removed every concern about the position.
Araújo has provided defensive solidity, while Frimpong offers plenty going forward. The challenge is finding the right balance between those qualities.
Bradley gives Andoni Iraola another option, and that competition can only be a good thing once he is fit enough to play.
I’m not suggesting he will suddenly solve every problem. He still has to prove himself again after a lengthy injury lay-off. But having a player who knows the club, understands the demands and has already shown what he can offer would be a welcome boost.
Nobody should rush him back
The important thing now is patience.
Bradley has been out for months, and getting back on the grass is not the same as being ready for Premier League football. The next stage is building up his workload, joining training sessions and gradually getting used to the intensity of working with the squad again.
There is no point rushing that process just because Liverpool need him.
I want to see Bradley back playing regularly, not returning too soon and suffering another setback. He is still young, and there should be plenty of football ahead of him if his recovery goes to plan.
Iraola will have to manage his minutes carefully when he eventually returns. That might mean substitute appearances initially, followed by gradually increasing his involvement as his fitness improves.
Supporters will understandably be excited, but we need to let the medical staff do their job.
A boost for Iraola and Liverpool
Liverpool have a demanding schedule, and squad depth is going to matter enormously over the coming weeks and months.
Having Bradley back in the picture would give Iraola more flexibility, particularly with the number of matches Liverpool have to navigate across the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups.
It would also give Bradley the opportunity to fight for his place rather than having to walk straight back into the team.
For me, that is how it should be. He has the potential to become a very important player for Liverpool, but he will need to earn his place again.
The positive news is that he is moving in the right direction.
After such a frustrating spell on the sidelines, getting back on the grass and moving closer to team training must feel like a huge moment for Bradley.
Liverpool fans have waited a long time to see him back, and we’re finally getting closer to that moment.
There is still work to do before he is ready for competitive action, but this is the kind of progress we have been hoping for.
Take your time, Conor. Get yourself fully fit, because Liverpool are going to need you.
