Liverpool Have Sent a Clear Message to Harvey Elliott – And He Needs to Take His Valencia Chance

22 Oct

Liverpool haven’t forgotten about Harvey Elliott. Far from it.

The Reds have sent Kiko Espinar, the club’s head of international relations and scouting, to Valencia to discuss Elliott’s loan with sporting director Braulio Vázquez. And the message coming from both clubs is pretty clear: Elliott needs to step up if he wants to get his career moving again.

According to Sanchis14, Liverpool and Valencia have both asked the midfielder to run more, be more effective on the ball and keep working hard in training. The encouraging part is that Elliott has been receptive to that feedback.

I hope he is, because this is an important period in his career.

Elliott has plenty of ability. We’ve seen that in a Liverpool shirt, particularly when he has come off the bench and changed games with his energy, passing and willingness to take risks. But his career has stalled over the past couple of seasons, and another loan spell where he struggles for regular football would be far from ideal.

Liverpool want to see more from Elliott

Elliott’s move to Valencia was supposed to give him the opportunity to play regularly and rebuild his confidence after a frustrating spell at Aston Villa.

That didn’t go particularly well last season. He struggled to get minutes under Unai Emery, and his Liverpool future became increasingly uncertain when he returned to Anfield.

Andoni Iraola ultimately allowed him to leave on loan, with Liverpool’s attacking options making it difficult for Elliott to find a place in the squad.

I can understand why the club made that decision. Liverpool need players who can contribute consistently, and talent alone isn’t enough when you’re competing for places at a club with these ambitions.

The comments about running more and being more effective on the ball are interesting. They suggest the two clubs want Elliott to improve his overall contribution rather than simply relying on the technical quality we know he possesses.

That’s a fair challenge.

Elliott has a lovely left foot and can pick out passes that other players might not even see. But modern football demands far more than that, particularly when you’re playing in a midfield or attacking role where pressing, movement and work rate are essential.

If he can add those things to his game, he’ll give himself a much better chance of succeeding.

The fact he’s listening is encouraging

One part of this update I like is that Elliott has reportedly been very receptive to the feedback.

Nobody enjoys being told they need to improve, especially when they’ve already had a difficult couple of years. But the response matters.

Elliott is still only 23, and there is plenty of time for him to get his career back on track. He has already shown that he can perform at a high level, and his achievements with England’s Under-21s demonstrated the quality he possesses.

He now needs to turn that potential into consistent senior performances.

I’m not going to write him off because things haven’t gone his way recently. That would be daft. But he also cannot afford to let another season drift by without making progress.

Valencia have given him another opportunity, and Liverpool clearly still have an interest in how he develops. Espinar’s visit is a reminder that the club are keeping an eye on his situation rather than simply forgetting about him until the end of the season.

That should be a positive.

What happens next for Liverpool?

Elliott’s loan runs until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, so he has time to make an impression in Spain. The important thing now is turning that willingness to listen into performances that convince Valencia he deserves more opportunities.

If he can improve his intensity without losing the creativity that makes him special, he could still have a future at Liverpool.

Whether that ultimately means returning to Anfield and fighting for a place, or establishing himself elsewhere, remains to be seen.

For now, I just want to see him playing football regularly and enjoying himself again.

It is frustrating watching a talented player spend so much time trying to get his career back on track, particularly when we’ve seen what he can do in a Liverpool shirt. But the next step is down to Elliott himself.

Liverpool have made their expectations clear. Valencia have done the same. Now Harvey Elliott needs to show what he can do.

I sincerely hope he takes this opportunity, because there is still a very good footballer in there. He just needs to start showing it consistently.
