Liverpool supporters hoping to see Andoni Iraola’s side back in action against Brighton on Sunday may have to wait a little longer, with severe weather warnings raising concerns over whether the Premier League fixture can go ahead.
According to This Is Anfield, Liverpool’s home clash with Brighton could be in doubt for safety reasons, with winds of up to 60mph expected as Storm Boelo brings difficult weather conditions to Merseyside.
The match is currently scheduled to kick off at 2pm on Sunday, October 25, but the weather forecast has introduced an unwanted complication ahead of a game Liverpool will be desperate to win.
Importantly, though, the fixture has not been postponed. A decision will depend on the conditions and the safety advice closer to kick-off.
Safety Comes Before Football
The Met Office has issued a weather warning covering the weekend, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to cause disruption in several parts of the country.
According to the report, gusts of around 55-65mph are forecast on Merseyside, potentially making conditions dangerous for supporters travelling to Anfield and those attending the match.
The local Safety Advisory Group will be involved in any decision about whether the game can proceed.
That group includes representatives from the clubs, Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council. Its responsibility is to consider public safety, including the risks surrounding the stadium and the journeys supporters make to and from the ground.
It is not simply a question of whether the players can cope with the wind on the pitch. If the conditions create unacceptable risks for fans, staff or the wider public, the authorities may have little choice but to recommend postponement.
Liverpool Have Been Here Before
Liverpool supporters will remember the Merseyside derby postponement in December 2024, when Storm Darragh brought extremely strong winds to the region.
That fixture was called off because conditions were considered unsafe, despite the disappointment for supporters who had planned to attend.
It is a reminder that even a major Premier League fixture is not worth putting people’s safety at risk.
Nobody wants to see Sunday’s game postponed, particularly with Liverpool looking to build momentum under Iraola. However, if the weather deteriorates as forecast, public safety must come first.
What Would a Postponement Mean for Liverpool?
The timing would be frustrating for Liverpool, who are facing a busy spell of fixtures across domestic and European competitions.
After the Brighton game, the Reds have further important matches approaching, including their Carabao Cup meeting with Chelsea and a Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Finding a suitable rearranged date could prove difficult given the packed calendar, particularly if Liverpool progress further in cup competitions.
For Iraola, another postponement would mean adjusting his plans and potentially dealing with an even more congested schedule later in the season.
Liverpool will want to keep playing regularly and build on the encouraging signs shown in recent performances. But there is little point worrying about a rearranged fixture until a decision is actually made.
Liverpool Fans Should Keep an Eye on Updates
For now, supporters should avoid assuming the match is off. The warning means there is a potential concern, not a confirmed postponement.
Anyone planning to travel to Anfield should monitor official updates from Liverpool FC, Brighton and the relevant authorities before setting off.
The final decision will depend on the weather conditions and the safety assessment.
Let’s hope the game goes ahead as planned, because Liverpool have important points to fight for and Anfield will be ready to get behind the team.
But if Storm Boelo makes the conditions dangerous, there is only one sensible decision. Football can wait. Supporters’ safety cannot.
