Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on one of German football’s brightest young talents, with Bayern Munich teenager Lennart Karl emerging as a potential transfer target.
According to Christian Falk of CF Bayern Insider, Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs to have made enquiries about the 18-year-old’s situation in Munich.
Arsenal and Manchester United are also understood to have made contact, with all three clubs monitoring developments after some uncertainty surrounding Karl’s position at Bayern.
His reported valuation is around €60 million (£50.1m).
That is a substantial figure for a teenager, but Karl is clearly a player attracting plenty of attention across Europe.
Why are Liverpool interested in Lennart Karl?
Karl enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign at Bayern last season, registering nine goals and seven assists in 34 appearances.
He has already demonstrated that he has the technical ability and attacking instinct to make an impact at the highest level.
However, opportunities have been more limited this season, and recent comments from Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness have put his situation under the spotlight.
Hoeness publicly warned the youngster that he was not yet a superstar and needed to remain humble.
Those comments have inevitably attracted attention, although they do not mean Bayern are ready to let him leave.
Christian Falk has reported that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have made enquiries to establish whether there could be an opportunity to sign him.
Bayern still want to keep their young star
Liverpool supporters shouldn’t get carried away just yet.
Karl is contracted to Bayern until 2029, and the German champions remain determined to keep him and develop his potential.
There have been no new contract negotiations so far, but that does not automatically mean a departure is on the cards.
Bayern know exactly what they have in Karl, and they are unlikely to allow one of their most exciting academy graduates to leave without a fight.
A reported £50.1m valuation also shows that this would not be a cheap gamble.
Could Karl be a good signing for Liverpool?
I can see why Liverpool would be interested.
The Reds need to keep adding quality to their attacking options, and bringing in a young player with Karl’s potential could be an exciting move for the future.
He can operate in attacking midfield and out wide, offering creativity, close control and an eye for goal.
Under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool need players who are comfortable playing with intensity, taking defenders on and making things happen in the final third.
Karl could offer another dimension, although at 18 he would need time to develop and adapt to the demands of English football.
The important thing would be making sure he has a genuine pathway into the first team rather than simply spending £50m on potential.
Liverpool must keep an eye on this situation
There is a long way to go before this becomes a serious transfer story.
An enquiry is not a bid, and Bayern’s position remains clear: they want to keep Karl.
But with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United all reportedly checking on his situation, this is certainly one worth watching as we approach 2027.
My verdict: I’d be very interested to see Liverpool pursue this one, but £50m is a serious investment in an 18-year-old. The potential is exciting, but the club would need a clear plan for his development and first-team opportunities.
If Bayern’s contract situation remains unresolved, Liverpool should certainly keep the conversation going.
