Liverpool have work to do at Anfield after going into the break trailing Arsenal 1-0 in a fiercely contested Premier League encounter.
Kai Havertz’s 16th-minute goal has given Mikel Arteta’s side the advantage, but Liverpool have shown enough attacking intent to suggest this game is far from over.
The disappointing moment came when Alisson’s attempted pass from a goal kick gave possession away cheaply. Arsenal made the most of the opportunity, with Declan Rice delivering an excellent cross for Havertz to finish at the far post.
It was a costly mistake, particularly in a game where the margins are likely to be so small.
Liverpool respond but lack the finishing touch
To their credit, Liverpool did not allow the setback to knock them completely off course.
Andoni Iraola’s side began to push forward, with Bradley Barcola looking dangerous and Alexander Isak trying to find space against Arsenal’s well-organised defence.
Barcola delivered a dangerous ball across the penalty area that was narrowly beyond Isak, while Virgil van Dijk came close to creating an equaliser from a corner. His header caused problems, with Isak almost getting the final touch.
Liverpool also had appeals for a penalty involving Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo, but nothing was given.
The biggest moment of the half came just before the break when Florian Wirtz produced a dipping free-kick that crashed against the crossbar. It was a superb effort and Liverpool were desperately unlucky not to see it go in.
Mac Allister also headed over, while Isak had an opportunity that he couldn’t quite keep on target.
There have been encouraging signs, but Liverpool need to turn their pressure into something more meaningful.
Arsenal remain dangerous
Arsenal have defended with discipline and looked comfortable absorbing Liverpool’s pressure.
They have also shown how dangerous they can be when given space to counter-attack. Rice has been influential, while Havertz has caused problems with his movement and positioning.
Liverpool cannot afford to become too open in their search for an equaliser. One more Arsenal goal would make the task considerably harder.
What should Iraola change?
Liverpool need more urgency and creativity in the final third.
Dominik Szoboszlai is available on the bench after returning from injury, and his energy could be exactly what the midfield needs. Rio Ngumoha is another option if Iraola wants someone willing to take defenders on and inject some unpredictability into the attack.
The manager will have to decide whether to make changes immediately or give his starting players a little longer to find their rhythm.
Liverpool have 45 minutes to turn this around
There is plenty still to play for.
Liverpool have created opportunities, Wirtz has come agonisingly close and the performance has improved after conceding. But Arsenal are an experienced side who know how to protect a lead.
The Reds need to move the ball quicker, show greater composure around the penalty area and make the most of the opportunities that come their way.
Anfield will be demanding a response.
One goal changes everything, but Liverpool need to make sure Arsenal don’t find another one first.
