Liverpool have suffered a frustrating defeat at Anfield, with Arsenal leaving Merseyside with all three points after a 1-0 victory.
Kai Havertz’s 16th-minute goal proved decisive, punishing a costly mistake from Alisson Becker and giving Mikel Arteta’s side their first Premier League victory at Anfield since 2012.
For Liverpool, it was an afternoon of missed opportunities, penalty appeals and growing frustration as Arsenal dug in and defended their advantage.
Andoni Iraola’s side certainly had their moments, but ultimately they could not find the equaliser their efforts deserved.
Alisson mistake gives Arsenal the advantage
The decisive moment arrived after 16 minutes.
Alisson’s attempted pass out from the back was intercepted under pressure, allowing Arsenal to launch an attack.
Declan Rice then delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Havertz arrived at the far post to finish.
It was a disappointing goal to concede from Liverpool’s perspective. Alisson is usually so reliable with his distribution, but this was an expensive error in a match where Arsenal were always likely to make Liverpool pay for mistakes.
The visitors suddenly had exactly what they wanted: an early lead and the opportunity to organise themselves defensively.
Liverpool hit the woodwork but cannot find a breakthrough
Liverpool responded positively and gradually began to put Arsenal under pressure.
Florian Wirtz came agonisingly close to equalising when his superb free-kick beat David Raya but crashed against the crossbar.
It was one of Liverpool’s best moments of the afternoon and a reminder of the quality Wirtz can bring to the side.
Alexander Isak also had opportunities, while Virgil van Dijk caused problems from a set piece. Raya did well to prevent Liverpool from turning one of those situations into an equaliser.
There were also penalty appeals involving Isak and Gakpo, but referee Andy Madley was not persuaded.
Liverpool continued to push after the break, but Arsenal defended deep, blocked crosses and made life increasingly difficult for the home side.
Arsenal defend their lead as Liverpool run out of ideas
The second half became a test of Liverpool’s patience and attacking imagination.
Iraola introduced Dominik Szoboszlai and Rio Ngumoha in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the team.
Liverpool kept searching for an opening, but Arsenal were disciplined and determined to protect their advantage.
Alisson was also called upon to make an important save from Christos Tzolis as Arsenal threatened on the counter-attack.
The longer the match continued, the more frustrating it became for Liverpool. There was plenty of effort, but the final ball and finishing were not quite good enough.
Six minutes of added time gave the Reds one final opportunity, but Arsenal held firm.
My verdict: A missed opportunity for Liverpool
This is a disappointing result, particularly because Liverpool were playing at Anfield against one of their biggest rivals.
I don’t think we should suddenly abandon everything we have been saying about Iraola or forget that this team is still a work in progress. But there are lessons to be learned from this performance.
Liverpool cannot afford to give away cheap goals against the strongest teams, and they need to become more clinical when opportunities arrive.
Alisson will know he should have done better with the goal, but the responsibility does not rest with one player. Liverpool had enough chances and attacking moments to get something from this game.
Arsenal deserve credit for the way they defended, but from a Liverpool perspective, this was an opportunity missed.
The result also ends Arsenal’s long wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield. That will make the defeat even harder to swallow for Liverpool supporters.
Liverpool must respond
There is no point dwelling on this result for too long.
Iraola needs to take the positives from the periods when Liverpool put Arsenal under pressure, but he also has to address the mistakes and lack of cutting edge that ultimately cost his side.
I have said all along that Liverpool need time under their new manager. We are not suddenly going to become title challengers overnight, and there is still plenty of work to do with this squad.
But losing at Anfield to Arsenal hurts, especially when the opportunity was there to get a result.
The Reds now need to put this behind them and make sure they respond in their next match.
One mistake, one goal and no points. A frustrating afternoon for Liverpool, and one Arsenal will remember for a long time.
