Andoni Iraola Gives Liverpool Injury Updates Ahead of Chelsea Clash – Wirtz Hope, But Two Stars Are Doubts

27 Oct

Andoni Iraola has delivered his latest Liverpool team news ahead of Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea, with Florian Wirtz offering some encouragement while Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Muñoz remain doubts.

The Liverpool manager also made it clear that, despite the busy schedule and Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Arsenal on the horizon, the Carabao Cup is a competition the Reds are determined to take seriously.

After the encouraging 2-0 victory over Brighton, Liverpool now have an opportunity to build momentum and move another step closer to silverware.

But Iraola faces some important decisions over fitness, rotation and how to get the best out of his squad.

Wirtz Could Be Available as Szoboszlai and Muñoz Face Assessments

The biggest positive from Iraola’s update was the news that Wirtz was feeling “quite fine” and was optimistic about being available against Chelsea.

Liverpool will assess him during training before making a final decision, so supporters will have to wait to discover whether he is fit enough to feature.

Szoboszlai and Muñoz are less likely to play, although neither has been completely ruled out.

I would be cautious about taking unnecessary risks with Wirtz, particularly with Arsenal coming to Anfield on Sunday. He is an important player for Liverpool, and the manager must consider the bigger picture before deciding whether to involve him.

If Wirtz is fully fit, however, his creativity could be valuable against Chelsea. Liverpool need quality between the lines, and he has the ability to unlock a defence with one clever pass.

The final decision will depend on how he responds in training.

Iraola Confirms Changes – But Liverpool Want to Win

Iraola confirmed there will “definitely be changes” against Chelsea, with the manager assessing how his players have recovered from the Brighton match.

That is understandable given the schedule, but the message from the Liverpool boss was clear: the Reds want to be competitive, win the game and reach the next round.

I am pleased to hear that.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has already warned against repeating last season’s Carabao Cup mistake against Crystal Palace, when Arne Slot made wholesale changes and Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat.

Rotation is necessary, but there is a difference between freshening up the side and weakening it too much.

I want to see opportunities for players who have not featured regularly, but Liverpool still need a strong enough team to beat Chelsea. This is a chance to move closer to a trophy, and it should be treated accordingly.

Every Competition Matters to Liverpool

Iraola stressed that every competition matters, and he expects Chelsea to provide a difficult test.

Chelsea are not competing in Europe this season, which means the Carabao Cup could be particularly important to them. Liverpool should expect a side determined to progress.

The Reds cannot assume that making changes will be enough to get through.

Iraola explained that rotation can be forced by injuries or influenced by the tactical demands of a particular game. He is also pleased that players coming into the side have contributed, even when their opportunities have been limited.

That is encouraging because Liverpool need their entire squad to be ready.

The season will not be decided by eleven players alone. Those on the fringes must be prepared to step up when called upon, and Wednesday provides an opportunity to show what they can do.

Jayden Danns Is Working Towards More First-Team Minutes

There was also an encouraging update on Jayden Danns, who has been working to build up his minutes after setbacks disrupted his availability.

Danns scored for Liverpool’s under-21s at the weekend, and Iraola hopes he can continue progressing and put himself in contention for first-team opportunities.

I would love to see Danns get another chance when the time is right.

Liverpool need young players to develop, and the Carabao Cup can provide a useful route into the senior side. However, his fitness and readiness must come first after the interruptions he has experienced.

If he continues to build up his match sharpness and impress in training, he could give Iraola another attacking option in the months ahead.

The Schedule Is Testing Liverpool’s Squad

Iraola acknowledged that the fixture schedule leaves little time for detailed preparation, with much of Liverpool’s work having to be done through video analysis.

He also pointed out that Liverpool will have less recovery time than Chelsea, Arsenal and Crystal Palace, but insisted that the team must adapt.

There are no excuses in a season like this. The schedule is demanding, and managing the squad properly becomes even more important when matches arrive so quickly.

This is why I believe Iraola needs to use his substitutes wisely and avoid relying too heavily on the same players.

Liverpool have to find a way to compete in every match without exhausting their key performers. Getting that balance right could make a huge difference over the coming weeks.

Iraola Wants Liverpool to Control Chances, Not Just Possession

One of the more interesting parts of the press conference concerned Liverpool’s performance against Brighton.

Iraola was pleased with the display but admitted that his team conceded too much territory during part of the second half.

He believes controlling the chances an opponent creates is more important than simply dominating possession.

I agree with that approach.

Liverpool’s opening 30–35 minutes against Brighton showed what they can look like when they press with intensity, move the ball quickly and attack with purpose. They scored twice and put themselves in a strong position.

The challenge is sustaining that level for longer.

Liverpool cannot expect to dominate every minute, but they must remain organised when opponents push forward. The clean sheet against Brighton was a positive step, and Iraola clearly wants to see more of that defensive discipline.

Against Chelsea, the Reds must combine their attacking threat with the ability to manage difficult periods of the game.

Isak Has the Trust of the Manager

Iraola also spoke about Alexander Isak, making it clear that the striker has the trust of everyone at Liverpool to score when he gets into the right positions.

But the manager also stressed that Isak has a responsibility to help the team create those opportunities.

That is an important point.

Liverpool need Isak to be clinical, but they also need him involved in the overall attacking play. His movement, link-up work and ability to occupy defenders can help create openings for the players around him.

The more chances Liverpool create for their striker, the better their prospects of getting the goals they need.

Isak has shown signs of finding his rhythm, and a strong performance against Chelsea could give him another boost.

Iraola Knows He Must Earn the Supporters’ Trust

The Liverpool manager was also asked about his relationship with the fans.

Iraola believes he must earn the right to belong at the club through performances and victories. He felt the supporters enjoyed the commitment shown against Brighton, from tackles and blocks to winning duels and making runs in behind.

That will resonate with Liverpool supporters.

Fans want to see quality, but they also want to see players fighting for the shirt. The reaction to Araújo’s defensive commitment against Brighton showed how much the crowd appreciates that attitude.

Iraola appears to understand that connection. Results matter, but so does the feeling that the team is giving everything for the supporters.

The Brighton win was a positive step, and another strong performance against Chelsea would help build that relationship further.

Chelsea’s Disciplinary Record Will Not Influence Liverpool

Iraola also made it clear that Chelsea’s disciplinary record will not form part of Liverpool’s team meeting or determine their approach to the match.

That is the right attitude.

Liverpool must focus on their own performance rather than becoming distracted by issues that do not directly help them win the game.

The priority is to play with intensity, make good decisions and take their chances when they arrive.

My Verdict: Liverpool Must Take This Opportunity Seriously

There were plenty of interesting points from Iraola’s press conference, but the main message is clear: Liverpool will rotate, yet they remain determined to progress in the Carabao Cup.

Wirtz’s fitness will be worth watching, while Szoboszlai and Muñoz face a race to be available. Danns is also working towards more minutes, which gives supporters another young player to keep an eye on.

Most importantly, Iraola wants Liverpool to build on the Brighton victory and sustain the intensity they showed during the opening half-hour.

I want to see sensible rotation, a strong performance and Liverpool in the next round.

Arsenal on Sunday is a huge fixture, but Chelsea deserve Liverpool’s full attention first. The Reds have an opportunity to build confidence, give deserving players a chance and keep their hopes of winning silverware alive.

Now they need to deliver on the pitch.
