Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on Leeds United centre-back Tarik Muharemovic as interest in the highly rated Bosnian defender continues to grow across Europe.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are among several high-profile clubs monitoring the 23-year-old, who has impressed since arriving at Elland Road. However, Leeds are reportedly valuing their defensive star at more than £60 million, which could make any potential deal a major investment.
Inter Milan, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also among the clubs linked with the defender.
For Liverpool, this is an interesting name to keep an eye on as Andoni Iraola continues to shape his squad and the club considers its long-term defensive options.
Who Is Tarik Muharemovic?
Muharemovic joined Leeds from Sassuolo in the summer for a reported £34 million and has quickly made an impression in English football.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international is a left-footed centre-back, a profile that can be particularly valuable when building a balanced defence.
He has been praised for his physical presence, strength in the tackle, aerial ability and composure on the ball. Those qualities help explain why several major European clubs are reportedly watching his progress.
At just 23, he also has plenty of time to develop further.
Liverpool need to think about the future of their defence as well as the present, and identifying talented players before their value rises even further is an important part of successful recruitment.
Why Could Muharemovic Interest Liverpool?
Liverpool supporters have seen encouraging signs from Jérémy Jacquet alongside Virgil van Dijk, while Ronald Araújo has also brought aggression and commitment to the defensive line.
But a club competing across multiple competitions needs depth and quality in every position.
Muharemovic’s left-footed profile could offer another option at centre-back, while his experience of playing regularly in the Premier League would potentially make adapting to Liverpool less daunting than moving from another league.
That does not mean Liverpool necessarily need to sign him. Jacquet is still developing, and the club must consider how any new arrival would fit into the manager’s plans.
However, if Liverpool believe Muharemovic has the potential to become a top-level defender, monitoring him now would make sense.
The £60m Price Tag Is the Big Question
The biggest obstacle could be the cost.
Leeds reportedly value Muharemovic at more than £60 million after paying around £34 million to sign him from Sassuolo.
That is a substantial increase in a relatively short period, although it reflects the strong position Leeds hold after securing him on a long-term contract.
The Yorkshire club are reportedly determined to keep the defender, particularly during the January transfer window. Liverpool should therefore not expect an easy negotiation if their interest develops into something more concrete.
Personally, I would want Liverpool to be certain that Muharemovic represents a significant upgrade or fills a clear need before committing that kind of money.
There is no point spending £60 million simply because a player is attracting attention from other big clubs. Liverpool have to recruit with a clear plan and make every major signing count.
Liverpool Face Competition From Europe’s Elite
Liverpool are not alone in monitoring the Bosnian.
Inter Milan have reportedly retained a strong interest after previously trying to sign him, while Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also been linked with a potential move.
That competition could push up the price if more clubs decide to make serious approaches.
However, reported interest is not the same as a formal bid, and there is no indication that Liverpool are close to reaching an agreement with Leeds.
For now, this appears to be a situation worth monitoring rather than a transfer that supporters should expect to happen.
My Verdict: An Interesting Target, But Liverpool Must Be Smart
I can understand why Liverpool would be interested in a young, left-footed centre-back who is already gaining experience in the Premier League.
Muharemovic looks like an intriguing prospect, and at 23 he could potentially offer several years of development and service. But the reported £60 million-plus valuation changes the conversation.
Liverpool have to decide whether he is the right player for Iraola’s system and whether the money would be better spent strengthening another area of the squad.
I would not dismiss this link, but I would not rush to spend £60 million either. Liverpool need quality defenders, yet recruitment must always be about finding the right player at the right price.
If Muharemovic continues to impress, his name is likely to remain on the radar of Europe’s biggest clubs. Whether Liverpool turn their reported interest into a serious pursuit is another question entirely.
