Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has given supporters another reason to be excited about Jérémy Jacquet, praising the young defender’s ability while making it clear that there is still plenty more to come.
Van Dijk described Jacquet as a “fantastic player” and believes his potential is exciting for Liverpool. But the captain also delivered an important message: the youngster must keep working hard, continue learning and remain level-headed.
I like that message because Liverpool need talented young players who are hungry to improve, but they also need the patience and guidance to help them fulfil their potential.
Van Dijk Knows What It Takes to Become a Top Defender
Van Dijk has been there and done it. He knows what it takes to become one of the best defenders in the world, and his experience could be invaluable for Jacquet.
When your captain speaks positively about your ability, it is encouraging. But what stands out to me is that Van Dijk is not suggesting Jacquet has already made it.
Instead, he is talking about potential, hard work and learning.
That is exactly the right approach. Young defenders will make mistakes, and playing for Liverpool brings enormous pressure. The important thing is how they respond, learn from difficult moments and continue to develop.
Jacquet has the opportunity to learn from one of the most experienced centre-backs in the game. He needs to take full advantage of it.
Building a Partnership Takes Time
One of Van Dijk’s most interesting comments was about the need for both players to understand each other better in different situations.
He explained that they are still learning what the other does in certain moments, adding that they have been doing pretty well so far.
That is an important point.
Being a good centre-back individually is one thing. Building a reliable partnership is something else entirely.
Defenders need to know when their partner will step forward, when to hold the line, who will cover the space behind and how to react when opponents put them under pressure. Those decisions often happen in a split second.
The more time Van Dijk and Jacquet spend playing together, the better that understanding should become.
Liverpool have needed greater consistency at the back, and developing a strong central defensive partnership could be a massive part of improving the team under Andoni Iraola.
Jacquet Has a Huge Opportunity at Liverpool
I have been encouraged by what I have seen from Jacquet so far. He looks like a defender with the ability and temperament to make a real impression, but the biggest challenge is maintaining that level and improving as the demands increase.
Liverpool supporters should be excited, but we also need to give him room to develop.
Van Dijk’s advice about staying level-headed is particularly important. Praise can quickly bring expectations, especially at a club where every performance is scrutinised.
Jacquet must keep his feet on the ground, listen to the experienced players around him and continue working on his game.
If he does that, Liverpool could have a defender who grows into an important player over the coming seasons.
And having Van Dijk alongside him during that process can only help.
My Verdict: Liverpool Could Have Something Special Developing
What I like most about Van Dijk’s comments is the combination of excitement and realism.
He clearly rates Jacquet, but he also understands that potential means very little unless it is backed up by consistent hard work. That is the mentality Liverpool need throughout the squad.
The partnership is still developing, and there will be tougher tests ahead. But if these two continue building their understanding, Liverpool could benefit enormously.
Van Dijk remains an important leader at the heart of the defence, while Jacquet has the opportunity to learn from him and establish himself at Anfield.
Liverpool fans have every reason to be excited about Jacquet’s potential. The key now is patience, hard work and allowing that partnership with Van Dijk to grow.
If Jacquet keeps learning and improving, the best could still be ahead of him — and that is a very encouraging thought for Liverpool.
