Liverpool have received some encouraging news ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brighton, with Bradley Barcola ready to return after completing his recovery work.
However, there is still a question mark over Victor Muñoz, who is struggling with knee pain after taking a knock against Brentford.
Andoni Iraola has a growing list of injury concerns to manage, so having Barcola available would be a welcome boost as Liverpool prepare for another important afternoon at Anfield.
Barcola Ready to Return
Barcola’s absence from Liverpool’s main training group earlier this week raised a few eyebrows, particularly with Brighton approaching.
Thankfully, the French winger’s individual recovery session was not understood to be injury-related. Liverpool have been managing his workload after a demanding run of matches, and he trained on Friday ahead of the weekend fixture.
That is positive news for Iraola.
Barcola has the pace and directness to cause problems for opposition defenders, and Liverpool need those qualities against a Brighton side that will not make life easy for them.
He has had to work his way into the team following his arrival, but there is plenty to like about his ability to attack defenders and stretch the pitch. With Liverpool facing a busy run of games, keeping him fit and fresh will be just as important as getting him into the starting eleven.
For me, Barcola being available is a significant boost. Liverpool need as many attacking options as possible, especially with several other players already sidelined.
Muñoz a Doubt After Brentford Knock
The situation is less clear when it comes to Muñoz.
The winger picked up a knock to his knee during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Brentford and subsequently missed the Champions League win against Villarreal.
Iraola has now indicated that Muñoz is still experiencing pain in the knee, leaving his availability for Brighton in doubt.
That will be frustrating for the youngster, who would have been hoping to build on his opportunities in the first team. Liverpool will not want to take unnecessary risks with a player who is clearly not completely comfortable.
The important thing is to establish whether the problem is something he can play through safely or whether he needs more time to recover.
Liverpool supporters will hope it is nothing serious, but there is little point rushing him back if doing so risks making the problem worse.
Iraola Still Has Plenty of Problems to Solve
The latest updates come at an awkward time for Liverpool.
Jeremie Frimpong is facing around three and a half to four weeks out with a hamstring injury, while Dominik Szoboszlai is also dealing with a muscle problem. Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain unavailable as they continue their respective recoveries.
That is a sizeable list of absentees for a team heading into a demanding period of the season.
Liverpool have shown plenty of character in recent weeks, particularly during their remarkable 4-3 comeback against Villarreal. But Iraola will know that his squad cannot keep losing players without it eventually affecting his selection options.
The Brighton match is another important test, and the manager will want to make sure the players he does have available are ready to perform.
Liverpool Need to Make the Most of This Boost
The good news is that Barcola appears ready to play, giving Iraola another attacking option for Sunday’s game.
Muñoz’s situation is one to watch, though, and Liverpool will need to assess him carefully before making a final decision.
There is no need to panic over one player’s fitness, but the growing injury list is becoming a concern. Liverpool need their key players available if they are going to maintain momentum across the Premier League and Champions League.
Barcola’s return is a positive, but Liverpool could really do with some more good injury news before Brighton arrive at Anfield.
Let’s hope Muñoz’s knee problem settles quickly and the Reds can get through Sunday’s game without adding another name to the casualty list.
